Car idled for 2 hours - went to the beach

OK, so I am an idiot. Parked the car, forgot to shut it off, took my stuff from the trunk and went to the beach. Had the remote key with me all the time. Came back 2 hours later and found the engine still running.

Did this cause any damage?

Is it not supposed to shut itself off after some time if the key is not inside?

Thanks for all replies.

I did something similar one time when my wife (g/f at the time) and I went to a Texas Rangers game a while back. We drove my turbo DSM to the game. We were running a little late and surprisingly I found a kick *** close parking spot. In a hurry we jumped out of the car and since it had a turbo timer on it I was used to it still running. Time to leave the game and I had no keys in my pocket. Immediately I realized I left the keys in the ignition and the car was running. I sprinted out of the ballpark and luckily the car was still running when we got back, doors unlocked an it was still there!

Anywhoo, you shouldn't have any damage.

The only thing you hurt is your wallet with respect to the gas you wasted...your car should be fine.

I've done that twice...once for like 7hours (wasted half a tank) and did it again when i went out to eat dinner with my mom (1hr)...

lol i was expecting no one to relate to this story, that sucks bro

though i haven't ever done anything compared to yall, once i was in a rush to class found a spot that was jus a lil too small, walked outside to check the spot and my door swung shut while i was checking haha, it was a ford focus with no alarm so the locks were all on lock and my keys were in the ignition with the car on and i had low gas,had to wait 45 mins for AAA and yeah... i was even later to class

Had a civic that was stored in our warehouse. I used to start it every few weeks to make sure it kept a charge etc... Well, one afternoon I started it and then got busy at work and then went home. Came back 16hrs later, still running with fairly unsafe levels of CO , woooops! Won't do that again!

change your oil and call it a day.

I used to spend my working days and nights on an oilfield truck that idled for DAYS AND DAYS at a time. We got YEARS out of those engines.
