How much more would you pay for a G37 over a G35?

I have decided that I want a G sedan, but I have conflicting opinions on whether to get a 2008 G35 or a 2009 G37 sedan. I know that the transmission changed and the engine was tweaked. And it's now called a G37. But other than that, it's essentially the same car.

Down here in Phoenix, I can get a new 2008 G35 for about $5K less than a similar 2009 G37. Is the extra $5K worth it? Or am I throwing my money away by picking the 2009 over the 2008?

Factor in the depreciation of the 08 in your math. Only you can decide if its right for you. Is the extra power, new tranny worth it to you?

The real question for you is how long will you keep the car. If you plan on keeping the car 5+ years the 08 is proabbly a better deal for oyu. If you plan on selling it in 3 years then the depreciation hit you're taking on an 08 now will negate any savings you'll have.

I looked at the same things, in ATL the Infiniti dealers are doing $500-$1k over invoice and then subtract the $1K dealer cash, so you are at Invoice or $500 below. The G37 had a $1K price increase. There is $3K in dealer cash for an 08, so there is at least a $4500 real difference here in ATL. So it goes to how long will you keep the car?

I rarely keep a car over 2 years so for me it is easy G37

Thanks for the advice guys.

kluken - I actually do keep my cars for more than five years (actually, more than ten years). So depreciation isnt really a factor for me. However, I imagine that since I keep a car so long, the price difference between the G35 and G37 amortized over 5-10 years perhaps makes the G37 worth it. I do see what youre saying though.

Overall, I just wanted an opinion on whether the new tranny and upgraded engine really mean that much. I havent driven both cars back-to-back, so my experience is somewhat limited.

If you're planning to keep the car a long time and the depreciation issue isn't a factor I have serious doubts that the 22hp and new tranny are worth $5K. Another thing to consider is that the economy isn't getting any better and the 09 G37's should start seeing better incentives within the next 4-5 months. If you're willing to wait a few more months for a car you'll keep for 10 years you could get the new engine and tranny as well as a good deal.

If I were a long-term car buyer I would ALWAYS shop at the end of the model year. As a short-term buyer who flips cars every few years I always shop early model year so I get a full year of driving the car before it's "a year old" as far as the used market is concerned. IMO, it seldom makes sense to make a mid-year purchase unless you're leasing in which case it just doesn't matter at all.

Gotta agree with everyone for the most part. BUT hear me out. Same situation. I needed a car now (actually almost a year now, but nevermind... I wanted the G37 sedan) and then I saw the end of year pricing/availability fiasco. It ended up being about $3000 difference between a G35 and G37. I got the G37 because availability of G35s w/ the packages I want weren't looking so hot and the G37 will be with me for a long time to come.

If I found the G35 I wanted I would have bought it at 3k less than the G37. That being said I have to live with my choice and I got exactly the car I wanted at a slightly higher price. The 37 has a tougher engine note and plenty of gears so you aren't hurting on the highway in 5th gear. Minor fit and finish rounds it out. I say sit/drive both on the same day. Go eat lunch & discuss your likes/dislikes(?) of each with your best friend/significant other, and then go buy it! If you really love the G and you're ready to spend, go with your heart. I personally couldn't stand having the 5AT on the highway. I love my extra gears, shifting tweaks when using DS mode, and the little differences to fit and finish (heater ***** & richer leather surfaces FTW!).

Sorry to be so damn long-winded. PM me if you wish for me to regale any more of my G37 experiences. Best of luck to you!

I have a G35 XS and would get the G37 XS for several reasons. First, the engine is different, not just "tweaked". It is slightly larger (no rocket science here) and has variable valve timing, which the G35 does not have.

Want to experience the difference? Drive the coupe, it has the same engine as the 37 sedan, then drive the 35 back to back.

Then there is the 7 speed transmission, enough said.

To me both cars are great to own, but my money is on the 37.

Good luck

The VQ35HR has both intake and exhaust VVT. The G37 engine has VVEL which means variable valve event and lift, which is different.

I would go with the 08 because the HR motor has proven to be reliable. There have been complaints of excess engine noise with the VVEL motor to which NISSAN has formulated a special (expensive) oil to address.

Good Luck!

Used 07 and 08 sedans with around 20k miles are going for 20-22k in my area. I say if you're going for the G35 model then you might want to consider buying used.

I have an '08 G35x and I would def say to go for the extra 22hp because you'll be benefiting from the extra power, exhaust note, engine improvements, etc.

All around, you'll be losing nearly $3500-$5000 anyways from the 1 year difference in models simply from depreciation.

If I was in your shoes, I would do a TON of research using www.kbb.com, making sure to study the depreciation of Infiniti's in general. But don't take my word for it: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...rs+page-7.html

Btw, I leased my car this June and I already can't wait to get the new G37 when my lease finishes!

best of luck!

Make sure to watch the video!

Agreed^. Wait a year and buy the G37 used. That's what I did with my G35 and paid 8k less for a car that still had a long warranty and smelled new.
