Appreciating What We Have.

This post is just reaffirming what we already know—we drive a great car.

On New Years Eve, I was in a car accident on the freeway. I was the middle car in a 5 car pile-up, which means that not only did I get rear-ended, but I also rear-ended someone else. I was fine because the car took the damage and did what it was designed to do. The rear impact (from a Chevy cargo van, the equivalent of a brick wall) caused my trunk to buckle straight up and my fenders to flare out (as well as bent mufflers and other things). The front damage includes a broken grill and dented hood. We were all getting on an interchange, so none of us were doing full speed, so that made the impact much less than what it could have been. We were doing about 40 mph.

I feel lucky to be driving the G. It is a well designed car because I could see how all of its construction took the energy from the crash away from the frame of the car, and in effect, away from me. My airbags did not deploy, and although the hit from behind was hard, I was ok because of the car I was driving. I say this compared to some of the other cars, like a Honda Civic and Nissan Versa (those drivers were ok too, but their cars were completely destroyed).

My G was in the shop for over a month, which forced me to rent a car—a Pontiac G6 GT. I am not here to discuss whether or not this is a good car, but driving that Pontiac G6 for a month made me realize how much I missed my G. What do they say? You do not appreciate what you have until it is gone. That is so true.

I am back driving my G today, and I can honestly say I missed my car while it was in the shop. I used a company called Fix Auto, and they did a great job. They really make you feel comfortable leaving your car to be fixed—in fact, you get a text message on your cell phone every day telling you what they are doing and the percentage complete. They got my car done a full month sooner than they promised. If you ever need body work for what ever reason, go see George Ruiz at Fix Auto in Montclair. I told them that this G was my “baby” and that I hate rattles—my car now looks and drives like the day I bought it!

With all the things the G does well—those things that we can “sense” as we drive it—it is the many things that I cannot “see” or cannot “sense” that I am thankful for. This accident taught me to appreciate what I have, not just an Infiniti G35, but everything in general.

That is it. Thanks for reading. Enjoy your car.

It's great that the repair process turned out well for you. In most cases when a car is repaired from an accident, it just NEVER feels the same especially from a severe impact.

Overall, the car definitely feels more "loose" if you know what I mean..
this is from my own past experience w/ multiple repairs performed in various repair shops.

Good to hear you are okay... accidents always suck.

Cars are designed to collapse, absorbing the impact, but in a case like yours, I'd rather have the Civic which usually will get totaled out by the insurance for a new car. Hondas might get totaled, but they are built just as well to protect the passenger compartment.

If you got your car repaired, frame pulled out, new body parts, etc... the crumple zones most likely won't act the same the next time you find yourself in the same situation.

Well spoken and I completely agree.... we are all blessed with a fantastic car. It's fun, sure. But it also offers something that we often take for granted until we actually need it... it's a very safe car. This is how the G landed it's way into my garage. I needed something fun for when I was by myself and something safer than safe when I have my two beautiful daughters in the car with me every morning.

I've also been without the G. Nothing as drastic, but I cracked my front bumper on a coyote and my rear bumper got scuffed from a crack *****... another story for another day.
While in the shop on those occasions, I was blessed with a base model Dodge Charger with bald tires (in January) and a Jeep Commander, which couldn't command it's way down a perfectly straight smooth road. Both were complete POS's and every single day since, I know what I have and thank my stars for it.

I thought this thread would be about how we should be thankful for having these cars in this horrible economy. Watching it fall apart around me is another reason why I'm thankful. If today was buying day instead of early 07, I'd be looking at used Chevy Nova's and not brand spankin' new G's.

We're all lucky.

Wow bro, we are all glad that you are ok.
I know exactly what you mean.

I wasn't involved in an accident like yours, but my car was rear ended.
My car had some frame damage and took a month to fix to stock specs.

For that month I didnt i drive or even see my car, i missed it like crazy.
I drove my moms benz and i hated it so much I didnt even feel like driving.

It is a great car and i dont regret getting something faster.
I love this car

Again, im glad your ok and glad to hear that car is doing well

I LOVE DRIVING MY G SO MUCH AND IT SHOWS ON THE MILEAGE. i drive it every chance i get...even just going to the corner store to buy a six pack...hehe.
As for FIX AUTO, been there 3x and they always do a good job...not for my G though but for my GMC Envoy and Honda Civic. the one in Ontario Auto Center is the same place dealerships without body shop go get their customers wreck cars fixed.

Well in my case, I will tell it as a story.

Initially I went with an IS250AWD end of 06, the G 07 had not yet arrived when I got it and I had not researched the Infiniti website to see what was coming, at the time I was not a fan of what Infiniti had on offer. So the 07+ comes out and I could not look away whenever I saw it, it was simply beautiful. However, I kept reading that it was unrefined, noisy, parts were falling off etc. I guess in my mind, this had to be accurate and after all I was driving a Lexus (LMFAO, I was driving the wrong Lexus). 6 months into owning my IS, the power thing really started to bug me, I mean, here I am driving a 40k (with taxes) and I am getting smoked by anything with a V6 engine or turbocharged, one day I got smoked by a Toyota Sienna (Ughhh), that was it. So 15 months into it, I shopped around and it came down to the IS350 & G35 (335i WAY too xpensive). IS has no AWD so dropped that but liked it. When I bought the G, I bought it cos it was the logical thing to do, I wasn’t 100% for it and I thought I would regret my decision. There is only one thing better than driving this car and that is ***. I don’t miss my IS one bit and the G is twice the car than what I had. Drive it any chance I get. The car is simply top notch and as far as I am concerned in terms of refinement, the only thing I lost was the softer seats of the IS. Like someone said here, I am lucky I got the car before the credit crunch mess, otherwise I would be one unhappy camper
