Need A Help Please, Long Post. Can't Turn Car Off Properly or Shift out of Park!

ok, so bear with me here, i've done dozens of radio removals but this has never happened to me before. i pulled out the radio to do the PAX ipod adapter install, once i put it on the car went nuts.

turning the car to "acc" was fine but then the radio wouldn't turn on, and when i tried to turn the car to off it would shut off for 30 seconds then come back on. i took the pax out and reassembled the console but unfortunately the same issue persists. if the car turns on i can only turn it off by holding the button for about 30 seconds. teh radio/climate control won't turn on and i can't shift out of park.

any ideas? goddamn this is uncharted territory for me....

thanks guys!

Bob

I'm only guessing here but did you try resetting the ECU?

The head unit in the V36 is "integrated" into the car. You most likely missed reconnecting a cable harness assumming the ipod adapter was put in correctly. There are different procedures you have to go through to clear all the lights and from what I read from KP Technologies development thread, cycling the power will not do it.

there is one empty connector space on the radio but i can't physically locate the harness itself. now the lights won't come on at all on the dash. i'm definitely getting worried now....the fuses appear good....

I'm sure that all the ports on the HU are used (at least on mine) and impossible to get the connections mixed up. This is the back of my premium/nav/tech:

ok so mine is definitely different and the missing plug i cant find to fit the radio magically seems to be identical to the one from the gear shift....but i'm concerned to plug it in if i dont know that's really it....otherwise there are only 8 of 9 harnesses on the back of my radio present....thanksf or the help....

EDIT

the 2 x 6 white harness in your picture is on the lower left corner of my radio (base unit, no bose) and oddly it matches the plug from the gear shift. i'm sure its not it though.

now the odometer won't even come on. this makes no sense. i cannot figure this out. guess i'm gonna have to bite the bullet and tow it to the dealer, 45 miles away....

ok, got part of the harness issue resolved, the only things now are that the shiftlock remains engaged and the speedo won't light up. hoping it's something simple as with the harnesses.. we'll see....

ok, got everything but the climate control to work and the gauges light up but do not respond or read anything, says no gas, no RPM but the center display and everything else lights up. to get to this point the radio harnesses required some swapping (no they're not all shaped so they only go in one place, surprise.) one set was nearly identical. the speedo fuse had popped causing it not to light up. replaced that and here i am.

i checked the remaining fuses and they appeared good. can anyone throw me some clues as to which fuses to recheck or where to look? the owners manual directed me to the fuse box by the driver's foot, but is there another?

and the shiftlock is still engaged but i don't know if thats because the ECU needs resetting or if its connected to the meters not working.

I don't know if you already knew, but you can manually release the shiftlock if you ever need to.

I'm not quite sure what's going on with you re-connecting your harnesses, but looking at the pic Terry has provided -- all the plug's seem to have very unique shapes with very unique pin combinations -- but if you don't have nav/tech then this could be very different in your case

It may very well be the case that if you shorted an external fuse, you very well may have blown an internal fuse if you really didn't mix two harnesses up -- therefore your headunit may be toast. Hard to say all things considered -- sorry.

If you are 100% sure that everything is plugged into the right spot then put everything back the way it was, leaving no marks that you opened it or changed anything. Drag it to the stealership and play complete dumb. Say you woke up one morning and it was like that.

I'm suggesting because the more you mess with it, the worse its going to get.

ok so i rechecked all my fuses this morning and the "ELEC PARTS (IGN)" fuse was blown. now i am quite certain i had checked it last night but once i replaced it the climate control, gauges and shift lock returned to normal. last night the "METER (IGN)" fuse was blown.

i have no doubt its from reversing the harnesses up. i'll take a picture of the back of my radio friday or saturday because there are actually two quite nearly identical harnesses. one goes to the back of the radio and the other to the white box on top of the radio (remember i'm a non-premium/nav model). they fit perfectly (or so it looked) in the wrong slots so i never questioned it. reversing them must have caused the issue. it didn't occur to me until i looked at them closer.

ultimately it affects the starting circuit, panel lights, instrument cluster, radio and climate control. so glad this is over....who would have known???

so thanks for your help guys. i was actually about to bring it to the dealer this morning. it was a rental car before i owned it so who could have known what they did to it *wink wink*....

congrats man -- isn't it a great feeling when you come to the edge .. i mean, RIGHT up to the edge of f- ing up your ride.. and then figure out one simple fix and it's all back to normal -- you pray to the car gods all night saying you'll never do something like that again!
