Gas Mileage City vs. Highway spread

First: I did use search and didn't see an answer to this.

Now, my question. I recently bought an '07 G35S Sedan 6speed. I've made two long 99% highway trips with the car basically on cruise and got 24.5-25mpg.

However, in my 5.5 mile (45-60minute) commute to work which is obviously city, stop & go, and also in Atlanta summer, I'm getting 13-14 mpg. Should I assume that my poor gas mileage is just a symptom of the conditions?

I would guess that that's the case as my highway mileage seems okay. Can highway be okay and city being off being an indication of something wrong or would both be off?

Thanks for any help you can give.

being in hotlanta and it's summer time, your probably running with the A/C on?...off the bat, that will affect it dramatically

definitely with the A/C on. I try on occassion to do the drive with just the windows down, but there's way too much standing still time and I start to bake...not good.

I actually thought something was wrong with my last car when I started doing this commute. Maybe it was better off than I though.

the car is rated at 18-19 mpg city anyways, and that's probably driving in grandma mode.

On highways I get around 21-22mpg. City driving I get around 17-18mpg. Here in Cali, I rarely use the AC.

I also get between 13-15mpg on my commute. Mine is probably half the distance of yours (little over 2 miles), though, and only takes about 5-10 mins depending on how many lights I catch. The fastest speed limit between my house and my office is 30 My old BMW had similar city EPA ratings, and I never got less than 18mpg, driving the same way. It didn't have 300+ hp either, though :-)

wowww, 45-60 minutes to go 5.5 miles? so you average less than like 7mph for an hour - ouch

Pretty much the same - my commute is 6 miles, and the highest speed is 40...I average 14 - 15 mpg (with some spirited driving too )

I've been getting pretty good mileage ever since I installed a spacer, intake, and new plugs.

25-27 cruisin on the highway at 80.

I'm still trying to determine city mpg, because I do get a little excited between lights...

I'm getting 18 to 19 with combination city and highway for my drive to work and I'm not milking it, it's hard to keep your foot out of the throttle, the car is so much fun to drive. I got 23 to 24 highway on a recent trip to San Antonio. So far I'm not disapointed in the mileage, it's about what I expected.

You must going Downhill, to get 28MPG....at 75MPH. Here in the NY area, no way.... after over 2 years, with 19.8k on the clock, best highway MPG 24.5 on a 200 mile run without stops or traffic - 70-80 MPH.

FTWTX: That's just about right for me too here in NY area. In fact, some folks talk about turning ac off, opening windows. I believe I read somewhere in a number of places: you are better off keeping the windows closed, regulate the ac temp and leaving it on for max MPG.

I've read the same thing that it's better to keep the windows up to maximize MPG, got to be the aerodynamics and besides, I didn't spend this kind of money on a luxury vehicle to worry about gas mileage. Right now where I live in Texas it's running over 100 degrees every day and this goes on for weeks so I'm using my a/c!

I'm getting about 16 mpg in all 99% city.

Once I get onto the highway, it was about 22 mpg at least when the car was new, with barely 4000 miles on it. Now with 11000 and change, I haven't done a long trip but I expect it to be close to 25 mpg.
