G37 7sp vs. G35 5sp auto trans

Just picked up an 09 G37, we had an 07 G35 w/ the 5 sp auto. Just wondering what others have noticed regarding the trans performance.
I love the G37 in almost every way compared to the G35 but it does seem to be a bit confused at lower speeds. The trans seems to be a bit clunkier in the 5-20 mph range when in stop&go traffic or just crawling to a stop. We only have 500 miles on the G37 so possibly the trans is still "learning" our driving habits. Just curious what others have noticed. BTW, the MPG are quite improved w/ the G37, we avg'd 28 mpg going 80mph from Vegas. I'd imagine it'll be around 30 once the motor is fully broken in, seems like about a 2 mpg increase from our 07. Thanks for any other imput here

yeah that's pretty much the what everyone is experiencing. .

the current understanding that the ITB that addresses the 4th to 3rd downshift helps a bit. but it's still up in the air. it's quite troubling.

Ours was built 4/09 so I guess that qualifies for the service. Hopefully it'll smooth it out somewhat. The trans performs perfect in all other aspects in my short time at the wheel, so I'm not too concerned. The throttle tip-in problem was addressed pretty well w/ the 07s so I'm confident they'll get this handled. Thanks for the confirmation, didn't think it was my imagination

Wow, if you'r getting 28 mpg cruising at 80 mph to Vegas then you should consider yourself VERY lucky. I have an '08 with the 5-spd Auto and make several Vegas runs a year and have never gotten better than 21, mybe 22 mpg. The best mileage I have seen for an entire tank of gas is 23.something mpg, and that was straight highway cruising around 70 - 75 mph, but any faster than that and the mileage decreases dramatically... that's what makes the 2 extra gears in the 7-spd so nice... you can cruise at 80+ and still get decent gas mileage.

Yep, I'm pretty impressed w/ the improved MPG, our previous 07 G35 got about 26 when it was fully broken in. BTW, we also are hooked on Vegas w/ about 4-5 yearly trips, even better when you can drive a G to get there
We're coming from New Mexico so it's pretty flat cruising.

Ahhh... Flat definitely make a difference. I can approach 24 mpg on an easy very flat highway run. Yeah, I'm in Vegas about 5 or 6 times a year as well, but mostly for business. I'm coming from L.A. / Orange County area, so Vegas is only a 3 hour drive from here, but you have to come thrugh the moutains, which absolutely kills your gas mileage... I usually average right around 20 or 21 mpg on my Vegas runs, depending on how fast I drive. I averaged just over 100 for an entire trip one time and made it in under 2:45!

The 7 speed has rev matching on most if not all models. The 5-spd. does not on all models. The 7-spd. also keeps the revs lower on the highway thus improving fuel economy...In my opinion 7 > 5!

May be, but as for the VQ35HR to the VQ37HR or w/e, our compression ratio is a lot lower, leaving us room to push more out of the engine. As for the G37, there really isn't much room to push ALOT of HP out of it. My opinion is the VQ35HR is the best VQ motor ATM. As for the cars they're exactly the same just one is bored out and the other isn't =\

That car is like the M5 I test drove, it needs to be driven with a stick or the Manumatic feature...

That's really good to hear - I have a 2008 G35x with the VQ35HR and I was never sure if that was the best engine to have. I'm just now getting around to doing some serious research on mods. I guess the lower compression ratio is especially conducive to forced-induction, right?

I have an 08G35x with the lease ending early next year, from what I have seen, performance wise the G37x=G35X, see C&D, the only place I have seen them tested. I am not too hung up on the contents of both cars, the output is what I care about. I know the 2010 comes with an updated interior, which is great but I may have to shop elsewhere as I need AWD. Also 0-60 in 5.Xs is getting crowded

Maybe it was me learning how to drive the car, but after 3900 miles my 7speed is silky smooth in D. In DS it likes to hold the gear, but the car is the happiest in manual shift. On the freeway, I’ve averaged 29mpg at 80. I do notice that whilst in M and coming to a stop in 2nd, the car will blip to 1st. However, in D it will not do this.
