The STI Hatch is the Primary reason I bought my G XS. You are, spot on, with the the Mazda analysis.
My last 3 Vehs were 02WRX, 04 STI, 05 STI. All three Tracked and A/Xd.
I would be driving another STI, right now, if it was a little unique in appearance.
At 66, I still Love raw performance. Putting 40K "stiff as a board" mi. a year, on my cars(business) never bothered me at all. In fact it made going to work VERY ENJOYABLE!!
I love my G, but I dont have that "Rush" you get from the exhaust and the boost and the 6 speed. If your young, and not trying to impress people about your economic status, then go for it. My BIG concern is realibality.
Good luck, Jerry

Thanks man!
When it comes down to it. My feelings for wanting that car aren't as strong as the feelings of regret i would have for giving my G away.
Doing a little more research i've noticed Mitsubishi dealers are a pain to deal with. Not to mention they have been known to NOT honor warranty claims on Evo's that are modified in any manner.

Well, I voted for the G.
Most of the reasons why I chose the G have already been posted, so I'll just add to them.
The G is a luxury car, and that car will always be good to you, no matter where you drive it. Like you said, the Evo is a one trick pony, it's only for performance, and if that's all you're going to do with it, then go for it.
I realized something a long time ago, most of us don't spend all of our time drag racing or taking sharp corners or going through slaloms or curvy hills.
I've got a '08 G35 sedan, and it'll go fast when I want it to, and that's about 5% of the entire time I'm driving it.
