i am not sure as i havent seen that piece with too much attention(ill do that today after work) but it is possible, on older cheaper cars it was just a piece of vinyl applied on there like many have gone on there cars now to change its color.

I am sure someone her knows for sure and will drop by, oor i will check after work and tell you my take on it, but paint is quite possible.

On my 06 sedan that black plastic starting getting ugly so I polished it with plastix and it looked a lot better. Try that first.

its has like spider web cracks in it now because of their polish. maybe thats what they used. i mean i shouldnt be waxing or polishing it if its still under warranty.

^ +1 - I'm assuming you're still under warranty. It needs to be replaced, especially if this is a repeat issue.

I think they treat decorative trim pieces the same way paint is treated. It's like saying, my car is dirty and under warranty so I shouldn't have to pay to make it look nice. The trim piece is just glossy black plastic. Mine was hazy from oxidation and fingerprints and the like. I clayed it and then polished it with a good plastic polish and now it looks fine. Now if they somehow put small cracks in your's, then that's a whole different story.
