Prepare for summer vacation

I will go on summer vacation for 3 months and I will park my car in a rented garage the whole summer. The owner said he is the only beside me who has access to that garage. But I am still worried. Just so you know, I will have my insurance suspends during that time to save almost $200/month. What should I do to make sure the car is still there when I get back? Or at least, make the garage owner responsible for any possible lost and damage to my car?

Thanks for your advice.

A written and signed contract is the only guaranteed way.

I don't think anyone will give you a guaranty in return for a small rental fee. I think the car is a special item. It's not even covered by your home policy.

It's better just to keep the insurance and park it on a driveway. I do that all the time when I'm on vacation but it's not for this long, usually about 30-45 days.

Try the written contract, and also try calling your ins-co to ask if they can help u out with a policy written for a car that's not going to be driven.

Thanks guys.

The garage owner, who is also my apartment owner, tried not to sign a contract for just a 3 months rent of the garage. So I think I will call my insurance to figure out the best way.

Hmm don't you have family that can take care of the vehicle while you are away?, that will probably be my first choice, but trusting you landlord will be a bit of a stretch, specially if he doesn't want to make up a contract, anyway good luck.

Phalanx, I don't know where you are from but here in Canada we can put a partial insurance on our vehicles....it's called "Fire & Theft". And it doesn't cost as much as full insurance but like it states the car is covered for any damage, fire, or if it's stolen.
But you cannot drive the car with this coverage.
Alot of people here have summer only cars that they store during the winter months and they just put on this kind of coverage.

I would look into this if you're so worried. Because I don't believe if anything happened to the car that the owner of the garage is responsible.

Since you are not really finding the ultimate solution, I think I have a great idea.

Just leave your car with me while you enjoy on your vacation, and i promise i will take good care of it as long as you leave the keys with me...

lol... Koolyaar.

I live in Minnesota and have insurance with Farmers. The nearest relative is my brother and he is going on a long summer vacation too :-|
I will talk to the insurance agent in town to find "fire & theft" insurance.

The local insurance agent gave me a quote for $130/6 months on "comprehensive" insurance which is a great deal for me
I'll pack up stuff right after the final exam and enjoy the summer vacation .

Thanks guys.
