Does Warranty Cover Corrosion on Calipers?

I have just over 61,000 miles on my '07 so I'm down to the power-train and corrosion warranty, do you guys think either coverages would handle the crazy corrosion on my rear brake calipers? I know some rust is normal on the rotors and calipers, but my rears seem to be insane. See hi-res pic:

Wow! that is some crazy rust for an 07! i get occasional rust on my rotors when the car is standing for a couple of days after rain or wash, but NEVER on my calipers. I am almost certain that the dealership would take care of that at only 61k after all its just an 07 which is too new to have rust on its calipers.

Take your car in and politely show your dissatisfaction and amusement on have rusted calipers so early, i am sure they can sand it off and probably apply a coat of CC on it.

That does seem like quite the unusual amount of rust. My G just hit 52k and I had a small amount of rust on the calipers but nowhere near like that.. mine has been in New England so it is very used to all the snow/rain as well. If you don't have any luck at the dealer you can always sand them down and apply some G2 paint. I just did that last week and I love the look over looking at the rust.

I suppose I can give it a shot when I take it in for the 40mph transmission sudder problem.

The amount of rust on the caliper got me worried (Chicago salt) so I crawled down to look under the car and aside from normal rust on the exhaust piping and on a few exposed welds, everything seems ok under there; I try to keep it sprayed off during the winter. Front calipers aren't bad at all.

Greekboy115: Was the G2 paint system pretty easy to apply?

Very easy to apply. Most of the work was getting the calipers ready for paint. I just took my time sanding/cleaning then got everything taped off and applied 2 coats of the paint. I can take some pics if you are interested came out pretty nice imo.

yes please post some pictures...I was thinking of doing the same thing. The only problem I have is deciding what colour to paint them.
I have the pearl white.....what colour do you guys think would look good?

Hmmm, judging by that pic you posted and the amount of surface rust on the actual rotor face (really hard to tell, but pretty sure), it would seem to me that a.)you have not driven your car in a really long time or b.) your rear brakes are not working...

Actually I drove the car 5 minutes before taking that photo yesterday and the car is driven regularly then garaged at night.

Yes, I'd love to see photos of them if you have some... Also, what sanding process did you use? ie: 800, 400? I probably need to start with a wire brush or something mine are so bad.

let the dealer take a look at them first, then decide from there.

That doesn't seem normal. I have an 04 and drive through Chicago's salty winters. Never had that much rust on my calipers--they're pretty much still silver....

I won't get a chance to get out there and take some photos today but I should be able to either get them Friday or Saturday. However in the meantime I would be happy to go through my cleaning process...

CLEANING
"Wash them down with the first bucket of warm water and an old sponge to get all the brake dust off first. Then, take a heavy wire brush and hit them HARD. Try to get as much off the rust, old paint. This will give you a good base for the primer and paint to stick. If you are REALLY **** about having nice-looking stuff, take some 300-grit sandpaper and sand the whole surface of the calipers as well. Once you get the cages as clean as possible, wash them down with the second bucket of clean, soapy water with the brush. This removes all of the oil, dirt, dust, and other contaminants that will cause the primer or paint to lift. Let them air dry for about 20 minutes."

MASKING
"While you're waiting for your calipers to dry, take advantage and mask off all of the areas around your calipers......."

[I pulled the above from an Acura forum, very helpful thread]

PAINT
When it came to painting I just really took my time and applied really thin coats of the paint. The G2 paint is pretty good when it comes to it's self leveling I found. Between coats I waited about 30-45min (A good time to clean the inside of the wheels). I waited a good 24hours before I had to take the car out for a spin just to make sure that the paint was set.

Good luck with the project if you decide to go this route but I would at least try the dealer before you head into it. I will post up some photos within a couple days so that you can take a look.

Thanks for your help and the great info! I look forward to seeing your photos this weekend.

I'm going to paint my rotors with G2 paint regardless of whether the dealer replaces my rear calipers or not which I'm doubtful that they will.

I'd be very suprised if the stealership will change out the calipers. The corrosion policy is for "rust-through", like rusting completely through sheet metal; the calipers do not have a rust-through condition. My advice - move to a warmer climate where they don't use salt on the streets.

Here are the pictures of the G2 Painted Calipers as promised.

Front Caliper:

Rear Caliper:

I just went with black as you can see because I did not want the calipers to stick out too much. However down the road I will look into some BBK.. for the time being I am very happy with my black calipers.
