Regular Oil?

Went to my local dealership to get the oil changed and they told be that they no longer put synthetic oil in because it burns and leaves residue in our engines. Anyone else hear about this?

That is just false info. I run synthetic in my car for the last 3 years. Our infiniti dealer puts synthetic oil in your car if you pay for it.

From my experience, synthetic oil lasts longer and has no ill effects.

I have never been told that they were using synthetic oil. In fact when asked I usually get a run around. If they were using synthetic the oil change frequency would be close to double the 3750 miles in the owners manual.

One side note, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, Porsche and other high end makes use synthetic oil in all of their vehicles. Amoung other benefits, that allows the owners to go 10 to 15k miles (Porsche) between changes. If there were ill effects to this type of oil, they would not use it.

IMHO, if you want syntheic oil either ask the tech that works on your car and see if you can bring your own oil or, frankly, take it some where that will use it (NOT Jiffy Lube or the like).

Never heard of that one. They use non-synthetic at the dealership where I bring mind. Thats ok with me because I change out every 3500 miles.

^ ask em to prove it and then see them come with some more rubbish.... things people do to make sales of products they want to sell.

I just changed mine with Castrol GTX 5w30 Shouldn't I be good for 7500 miles (all commuting 60mph 90% rural highway 10% urban)

Do an oil analysis. That's the best way to determine how long you should be keeping the oil in there.

^ +1 true, but the OP's story is something else as they are not even talking about how long the oil change interval should be, but the dealership is actually telling him that the non-synthetic oil is better and that synthetic would harm his engine which is false and can be proven through MANY tests that have already been done by many companies and individuals over many years.

The maker's above also run something like 8-10 quart oil pans too.

Sounds like a justification for the stealer to finagle a few more overpriced oil changes... no buy.

Wow, this is how I would respond to this if it happened to me. The first question I would ask is, "how stupid do you think I am?" followed by, "how stupid are you?".

Hopefully, they would realize I am not stupid and hopefully, they would have some sanity as well and apologize by following up with the real truth. If this did not happen, I would find the head tech/shop foreman/senior tech or whomever knew the real truth and tell them to educate this idiot because I wouldnt waste my time trying to help him...

I think that the only problem with using a synthetic oil is that people mistakenly believe that this gives them the ability to go 10-15k miles between oil changes which is absurd. Synthetic oil does not burn away as quickly as regular oil (if at all), but it does collect deposits and gets dirty and running sludge through your engine is a great way to damage it.

That said, I always put synthetic on my wife's cars because she frequently neglects to get her oil changed for 10k miles or more and dirty oil is better than no oil.

On my cars I put synthetic oil as well but I still make sure I change the oil every 4500-5000 miles

Since synthetic is thinner than conventional, it does burn in our motor. Not sure about the residue part.

Maybe they want to sell their "ester" oil instead of the other synthetic brands.. They go for 10 bucks a qt.
