reading transmission dipstick

anyone know how to read the dipstick on the trans for 2007+ sedan? I see the notches, but there is also a meshed/crisscross pattern right above it. is that the threshold? or min./max/service indicator? all this is on the "hot" side. The opposite side of the dipstick has no markings :/

Here are some pix:

I believe the side that says HOT you look at the cross-hatched part (bottom is low and top is high) and the opposite side is the cold side and you look at the 2 notches (cold is if you haven't driven it around much I think) and I believe you check it with the engine running (at least that's what I've been doing)

thanks for the response elayman I just checked my dipstick today while the engine was running after a 30 min. drive and it was waay past the cross-hatched high part... it was all the way towards the "rippled" part of the stick... is that bad u think?

check it again when it's cold on the cold side, if you have too much fluid it can be bad. Do you see any bubbles on the dipstick?

Ya if it smells burned or bubbling you need to change it. You can drain a bit out with the drain plug if you're too full and then add fluid as needed. When you add fluid change through the gears P R N D and back slowly a couple times to get the fluid leveled through out the tranny

Thanks for the tips elayman. I plan on doing another drain and fill today as well as Sunday after my long trip to VT tomorrow. So 3 drain and fills total with about 100 mi. in between each.

^ if you dont mind spending time and money doing that, it can only help you get out as much old/dirty fluid as possible which is always nice.

The 3 drain/refills is the way Honda recommends the ATF get "flushed" out of their system. Probably a bit safer and easier than unplugging the return from the radiator.

just finished the drain and fills guys... now it's perfectly red I used 12.5 quarts total. And now i know why i keep getting weird readings on my dipstick. I had to keep the engine running while checking it, otherwise, the level will come all the way up to the ripple/wavy part of the stick. Check when engine is running and look at hot and cold sides. hot side needs to be in the meshed area and cold (opposite) side needs to be in between the notches. Thanks for the help ya'll!

Please help, I just need a clarification so I dont overfill or underfill my transmission. When reading the transmission dipstick while the engine running at normal temp, the fluid should be in between the notches or it has to be above the notches in between the meshed area? I just doesnt make sense if the notches are for measuring cold when it says "HOT" in between the notches. I did my research and cant find the answer im looking to find. I really appreciate your help.

Tranny fluid levels are highly temperature dependent. The designations "hot" and "cold" are relative and may not yield very accurate readings, but it's still better than nothing. The dealership can talk to the computer to find the temperature of the tranny fluid to the degree and thus they can be very accurate.
