G35S, 6MT or Automatic?

Several of the reviews of the 07-08 G35 sport indicate problems or dissatisfaction with the 6MT.

What do you guys think? Is it best to get the Auto unless you are determined to have a manual?

I am planning on purchasing a low mileage v36 sport model in the next couple of months...I will be driving them first but I am afraid that after 30 or 40 thousand miles the transmission will exhibit issues that are not present on the low mileage car I test.

thanks in advance for any advice....

The manual transmission is great, it's the clutch that isn't near as good as it should be. I haven't seen anything to make me think the 6MT wouldn't be reliable or would give issues with normal use. Like any car, a used clutch is only as good as it's previous owners treated it.

The Automatic isn't bad, I had to live with one for a couple weeks as a loaner. The ability to manually select gears isn't worth the trouble IMHO, it shifts way to slow. You'll also have a much easier time finding a car in the color and options you want with an automatic. 6MT models are harder to find. The automatic will probably resell better as well when you plan to get rid of it.

I do a fair share of city driving and would only have gone with auto. The car is plenty fast. With the paddles it does give you control over the transmission. It does shift a bit slow but it's nice to just sit back and drive and not worry about the clutch in stop and go traffic.

I have no issues with the Auto, and actually do like it. It also shifts perfectly at the track whether you leave it at DS or in full manual. It's a smart auto and stays where you want and need it.

However, to this day, i regret not getting a 6mt. I really miss rowing my own gears even if i can never shift as fast as the best auto/dsg trannies these days.

Oddly enough, in my preliminary searches I have found quite a few 6mt's--I guess because they are a little slower to sell than the auto. In my forum searching I found the thread about removing the clutch pedal spring so I will keep that in mind during my test drive.

I live in a rural area and don't do that much bumper to bumper city driving so that's not a worry for me...I think I need to find one to test drive.

Look in the DIY section for the two clutch pedal fixes. After those, I have no complaints whatsoever with the 6MT. Love it!

Many of us are compelled to a manual for the speed advantage. The only draw back of the G35 6mt is that for some reason, it is not any faster than the auto. Once you get over that, you still feel more connected to the driving experience. That alone makes it a good choice.

The clutch is "tricky"... Not difficult to stall the car. Just beware of the slave cylinder. Try to find one that's already been fixed or take your's in right away. A really annoying issue (no cost to fix, just annoying).

But other than that, the transmission has been fine.

68K on my 2008 6MT, it still runs like the day I bought it. This is the best car, byfar, that I have ever owned. I don't find the clutch any more difficult than any other I have owned. Each has its own feel, once you get used to it there are no problems. I change the oil every 3750 miles and reset the MPG history. It shows a consistent 20 MPG after every change.

I have the original battery and am on the second set of brakes (I replaced them with OEM at 54K). I am on my third set of tires though and getting ready for the fourth in about 5K. It came with bridgestones (they lasted 17K), changed to Goodyear (they were too loud) went to Khumo Ecsta Platinum and will probably keep them. I don't need tires worth $200+ apiece, I don't run my car like I am at LeMans, the Khumo's are just fine and they seem to last.

20 MPG? Over the 13,600+ miles I have had my car, I have averaged 18.2 mpg. And that's dividing miles driven by gallons put in. Not sure how much I'd trust the computer over just doing simple math.

I second the Kuhmo's. Switched to those after the bridgestones died. But the bridgestones did last till 25k when I got the car.

Still not a huge fan of the clutch, but to each his own. Maybe I just don't like heavier clutches.

Averaging 21.2 mpg or so here, calculating the old-fashioned way. I do baby the car quite a bit for DD.

It would be a waste not to get the 6MT. That's just me though.

6MT provides more feel and control than automatic. Yes, clutch is at first tricky; it's long and has a high engagement. But you'll quickly get used to both. I second those who point out slave cylinder issue, which is easily resolved and makes the 6MT a dream. Best car I ever owned, having driven manuals for 40 years.
