If I bought my car used, should I reset my ECU?

Hey guys, I bought my car preowned and I was wondering if I should reset my ECU...I keep hearing things about this. If I should, how do I do it? Thanks!

Not necessary. It will learn to adjust to your style of driving anyway. But if you really want to, you can either disconnect the battery overnight or do the pedal reset procedure. Search for it.

I found that resetting my ECU made my car more preppy (i have a heavy foot)...My car after a while, would delay accelerating as I pressed my foot on the gas. After resetting the ECU, the engine was more responsive to my pedal pushing....

I believe my car did that because it wanted to be efficient saving gas...lol

Hmm...how much of a gas efficiency decrease did you see?

Did it turn the seats into Ralph Loren upholstery and have a Tommy Hilfiger first-aid kit? j/k
I think you meant "peppy"

Maybe 1 or 2 MPG at most...but like I said, the car will automatically adjust the settings after a while...so if you want to keep that peppy feeling, you might need to reset the ECU maybe every couple of weeks? There's an easy method using the gas pedals.

I just reset mine this weekend with a negative battery cable pull. I was getting this awful hesitation when I would first start moving. It was so bad the car felt like it was going to kill. I wanted the ecu to relearn my driving habits anyway so I did the reset. Ironically, the reset fixed my hesitation issue. I did lose some settings but nothing I couldn't fix. It's worth doing if you don't mind the hassle of setting a few things back up.

What sort of things do you need to set up again?

Let's see. I had to reset my window auto up and down, it lost my key to seat and steering wheel settings also. I also lost all my maintenance reminders and my mileage trip readouts. It's nothing that would keep me from doing it again. I also had to turn back on the steering wheel up option on exit and the sliding seat option.

ummm no need to disconnect the battery. just use this method. So simple. It might take a few times to master it though.
