Take a look at detailed images detailing guides. When I first got into detailing (about two years ago) I used this thing like a bible. I still always look back to get some nice reminders right before I am about to do a detail.

Good Luck!

make sure you keep a lot of "lube" on the surface you are claying...or else parts of clay will stick to your finish.

Cut the bar into sections. If you drop it, toss it out. Use a new piece. Make sure to use plenty of instant detailer.

Lots of youtube videos on proper usage.
Best advice I can give is, if you drop it, throw it away.

use lots of detailer, least amount of pressure humanly possible, one panel at a time and lastly wipe up and down never side to side or in circles!

dont forget clay is an abrasive!

I never heard of that before... I heard to wipe the direction of the wind during driving, front to back.

DetailedImage detail guide says as follows...

Step 4: Gently glide the clay bar over your working area using overlapping passes going left to right or up and down

So I guess it doesn't matter as long as your not going in circles?

think about this when the sun hits your car which scratch do you think will show up more one going down the length of the car or one going up and down?

every car ive seen out i can always see scratches and micro-swirling where they scrubbed the car side to side, you have to look real close or have the sun setting b4 you really notice vertical marks

anddd ive seen lots of big detailers make the same mistake of wiping side to side, I just went through a master detailing class and the whole time they stressed up and down, when we looked at our cars every mark we could see was side to side

which "up and down" is correct ?

front of car <-> back of car ?

OR

bottom of car < -> roof of car?

up and down everywhere

roof, hood and trunk i always split into 2 sections drivers side and passengers side and wipe from center out

most important thing is pressure, best way to keep our soft paint nice is to touch it as little as possible, NEVER scrub your paint if there is a bug or tar on the car use the proper bug/tar remover
