Fuel Gauge Reading Varies

I have a 2007 G35S sedan. I have had the car since last July and have just now noticed that the fuel guage seems to give a false reading.

I drove to work and parked my car with the fuel gauge reading a quarter tank remaining. At lunch I was was going to get my oil changed and when I started my car the fuel guage showed empty and the indicator for low fuel was on as well. I filled up my car then got my oil changed. I let the sensor tell me when it was full. Then I got in my car and the guage read 3 quarters full. Got my oil changed and then the fuel gauge read completely full.

I know this was a round about way to explain, but has anyone ever heard of or experienced this before?

I think I've heard of the fuel sender/sensor unit going/gone bad. Also think there's a TSB out for that. Either way should be replaced under warranty. Try the search button above you'll probably get more info on this issue.

If its out of warranty its about 400-500 in parts to fix, theres 2 units, one is around 100 the other around 300-400 depending on who and where you get the parts from.

I have had this problem also. In fact I just had the primary replaced for a second time about 2 weeks ago. The primary runs around $183 and the secondary runs about $108...or vice versa. They, service tech and manager, told me that this happens more in colder areas where they put more additives in the fuel. Up here in NJ, they say it is fairly common, and that Infiniti Service Rep told them that whenever they have a car in for service...tune up and the sort, that they are to put a can of Chevron Techron cleaner in the fuel tank. Supposedly it helps keep the problems in check, or prolongs the life of the components.

Interesting that an additive will keep mechanical sensor parts in good shape.

How badly designed are the parts if they need additives...

When I had my 04 Sedan people complained of the same issue, I however hadn't experienced it. Seems like Infiniti has the same problems throughout their generation without resolve. Fuel sender, Brakes, rattles and all other little sheit that has carried forward from one year to another. Oh well hope I don't experience this fuel guage issue with this G either
