Question Firestone Wide Oval or General Grabber UHP?

Hi All,

Just wanted to know what you would choose if you were limited to these two choices.

For what vehicle? That can't be right for the G, seeing as the Grabber are truck tires. Are you referring to the General Exclaim's or perhaps their G-Max replacements?

Well that's exactly why I'm asking actually. I live in Canada and shopped on 1010tires.com and tirerack.com. Both sites list the General Grabber UHP for the G35 Sedans. When I looked closely I saw that the General tires were listed as Sport Truck and SUV on each site.

I did a little Googling and see some people picking them up for cars. I also did some research on General's site and I can't tell what in the design is specific for trucks.

Thoughts?

That's odd, i just checked for my car and the Grabber certainly isn't showing up as an option.

In any case, truck tires in general have higher load capacities. This tend to translate to a stiffer ride. Of course they're also generally only offered in higher profiles.

To add, LT tires have more layers in them and are quite heavy compared to passenger tires.

I chose 2007, G35, Sedan and regular trim whenever asked. Is that what you selected? Did you check tirerack or 1010?

I got OEM figment size of: 225/55R17

The weight issue makes sense and would explain the longer tread life rating, I guess? I was considering the UHPs specifically because of their slower tread wear rating (UTQG of 360-A-A VS. 320-A-A for the Firestones) for few dollars more per tire.

I'm trying to get great bang for the buck and these were the tires I was looking at based on availability in Canada. Just had a baby boy and we had a one month long trip to Chile. Money's going to be tight this year so I have to take it easy.

I originally only checked Tirerack, but for the sport which has a different size. But just checked now (also on TR) for the same size you need.

About tread life, you can get passenger car tires that are rated higher than 360... many are in the 400 - 500 range in fact, and some are even cheaper than those two you considered. Although, please keep in mind there is no standard for UTQG ratings. They only apply to tires made by the same manufacturer, not between manufacturers.

Have you considered the other offerings at all?

And to answer your poll, seeing as the Firestone's are really the only car tires on there, then that gets my vote.

p.s. Congratulations on the kiddo! I've got two myself

I'll take a second look at the options on TR. I really appreciate the advice.

Admittedly not my best thread but in case someone comes through here looking for info on Firehawk Wide Ovals.....

I'm about 2000km into them. Really great tires. Before I bought I read people mostly complaining about noise. Very quiet tire for me so far, even after break in. Wet performance is phenomenal, which was also a complaint I read about. Haven't hit any fast corners in wet yet though.

Dry is alright for the price. Tires are really, really cheap. Performance is not at all close to what they cost. I'd say their mid way between OEMs and high performance summer tires. They cost the same or less than OEMs.

No brained if you're on a budget.

I just got these for my coupe two weeks ago. So far a good tire for the price. I had BFG_KDW's before which were good dry and wet but noisey. The Firestones are quieter but seem a little bouncy.
