Magnetic Oil Plug

Our cars don't come equipped with one correct? would there be a difference in plug styles? like one has a long magnet coming out the end and the other is in with the threads, etc...

How often should it be changed?

the magnet should always be at the end. if it was in the threads it wouldn't collect any particles in the oil itself. no our cars don't have it, and in reality you shouldn't need it but if it gives you peace of mind then go for it.

I couldn't find any in the right size locally, so I ended up buying from these folks: http://www.goldplug.com/automotive.html

its about $10, function is to attract all the metal shavings from the engine so they can be removed properly on every oil change.

You can also stick a flexible fridge magnet on the bottom of your oil filter and swap from filter to filter when you do oil changes.

^^ lol, typical Greddy pricing there . . . +150% markup

And hopefully, it's never for metal "shavings"; more like just super fine metal particles. Usually after draining a tranny with one of these, it's almost like a graphite grease coating on the magnet. No particles that you can even feel individually, but together they make a fine grease like paste. I haven't gotten that from my VQ, but it's still young yet.

I got the FilterMag which slips onto the bottom of the oil filter. It costs around $50 but i couldn't resist when I saw it at Napa. Same concept as a magnetic plug but more surface area. I can't confirm that it catches what the filter wouldn't but it should at the very least keep the filter material from clogging as quickly. this will also let you use the Fumoto drain valve if you are so inclined. I can attest to the strenght of the magnet. I guarantee it will not fall off while driving and you have to put a lot of effort to pull it off of the filter or I just slide it down to the end of the filter so it only has 50% attraction then remove.

http://www.shopfiltermag.com/ good website with actual test results and explanations of the concept.

The Greddy plug for $25 seems like it won't break the bank for some additional coolness factor. No one will ever see it other than you though.

How is it going to work on an all aluminum engine like VQ? Like people already know, aluminum is not attracted by magnets.

Agreed, I believe the wear items in a VQ are all non-magnetic. That would explain Nissan not using a magnetic plug for oil, but I believe they do put one in the differential where it can actually do some good.
