Auto insurance by day.

I don't know where to post this question, please move it to the correct place if you would.

Since the warm summer is here, I no longer drive my car to work but riding a bike instead. I only drive the G35 in the weekend either Saturday or Sunday. So, I am thinking of saving some money by switching a comprehensive insurance to a daily insurance. I called Progressive but they don't provide something like that. Does anyone know any insurance company have some offer like that? I know that car rental companies like Hertz, Enterprise... offer daily insurance on their rental cars for about $15/day.

Thanks,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that a product like this exists for normal consumers.

I really doubt that there is really a option like that for you to choose from. If there was a option like that then everybody would pay only when they drive and insurance companies wouldn't make any money.

I can't even imagine doing that because of the hassle it would be to turn on and off...

It is rather simple to do daily insurance. The company will mail you a 3G / Satellite Push start switch to slap on the driver door and before you enter just hit START and when you are done hit STOP.

Technically, you're just reimbursing them the cost of insurance. They pay insurance for the car whether it sits on the lot or if somebody rents it. It is not a separate insurance contract sent to their carriers.

AllState talked about offering something similar to what you're offering, but i don't think anything has ever come of it other than that new program where they'll put a device in your car to monitor your driving, this supposedly lowers your rates but i have not heard much about it either.

Contact other carriers, or even your own, and see if they can lower your rate if you use the car just for weekends. I know that my insurance #'s are slightly lower if the car is kept strictly for leisure/weekend purposes.

Many companies have different classifications for vehicles based on how much they're driven. I remember discussing it with my agent, and she said that if I drive below a certain amount, I can get a reduced rate. I believe she referred to it as a leisure classification, as soundmike mentioned.

Thinking about this further, if there was a "pay by the day" option, what happens if you park your car in the street, and on a day you aren't listed on the policy, someone smashes your car and leaves the scene? Wouldn't you be fully responsible for the repairs?

You can do leisure vehicle insurance, for liberty mutual it is 7500 miles per year, but I think you gotta have a second full time vehicle.

Maybe think about reducing coverage, or jacking the deductible way up for the summer.

I know AAA insurance does the yearly mileage and i think as low as 7k maybe 5k. They do check. Also to get lower insurance is to change your deductible to $1000 bucks. I thought about changing mine to $1500 but that might be a little much. Another Insurance that i use now is Farmers Insurance. (or is it state farmers) they do have the weekend driving only which is very nice. I use to have that on my older car which i only paid $200 bucks a year for liability only. If you want the number to that i can look it up and give it to you if your interested. And i'll have you talk to the people that help me out.
