In the front ! Facing towards your grille so air goes in there's a whole in them already from factory I cut mine next to it some people cut the whole front area. I didn't upgrade filters but would like to

i dont know, but i know i cut a hole next to the stock one about the size of my hand .. and it roars when i punch it. and Im pretty sure it made the car quicker, not by much but you know ..

I never modded my intakes so I dont understand this. What its the benefit of having a hole in the intake? Makes it sound like a cold air intake with the growl? its the hole cut before the filter or after? Wont it make dust and particles get in the engine?

 

No the hole is cut before the filter so nothing happens to the engine.
As for swapping filter, you can get the k&n drop-ins for like $55 each, its just a higher flow filter I think louder too

 

So in a sense this is like a ghetto cold air intake minus the hydro lock risk and the increase in supposed horse power?

Yep, by hacking it up you will probably lose hp at speed from the loss of the ram-air effect that's engineered into the stock airbox; supposedly we pick up another 6 hp or so when at highway speeds.

ALSO, IF YOU TAKE OUT YOUR O2 SENSORS TO REMOVE THE BOX, BE VERY CAREFUL TO KEEP THEM CLEAN AND SAFE!!

 

What r the disadvantages to this method? Why wouldnt infiniti do this to begin with on all the intakes? I assume that hydrolocking wont be an issue here because the intake is high and not low, so wouldnt it have made sense if the intake came like this to begin with?

 

i dont think anyone has done a dyno comparing them (it would be too costly and not worth it) but that might be part of the reason for the way they come...maybe cause power is gained in the lows but lost elsewhere? but im sure they had some legit reasons...one fellow on this forum mentioned heat soak but i havent had a problem with that yet, and i doubt i will even though it has been pretty hot here recently
