Every car that I have had, and spent time on forums discussing, has had the reputation of having soft paint.
Infiniti G
BMW E46
Subaru WRX
Lincoln LS
Camaro Z28
The bumpers on the other cars developed a lot of nicks so on the G I got paint protectant film and it has worked great so far. The rest of the paint on all of them has held up great for me, but I wax often.

My guess is late 90s/early 2000s cars may have still used older paint blends, whereas newer car are probably using more environmentally friendly paint (no VOCs or maybe water based?) I have seen a lot of people complain of soft paint on the 06 and up Civic Si, and some other cars i looked at when I considered the G. Toyota changed their paint process in 08, but I will say my sisters 07 and my moms 02 have very tough paint. They sit unwashed, covered in sap and bird **** for weeks, and no marks. My roof on the other hand is covered in white/rough spider web looking spots where sap got burned in. I got swirls too, my buds new 135 has swirl issues as well. Hopefully the figure out how to make hard paint before i get my next car.

My 09s paint is just as pathetic as my 07s The self-healing feature does work though, the small swirls and light scratches do flow back into the clear coat when you leave it out in the sun. The 50+ chips I have aren't healing though
BTW, what happened to your car Anton, since your motor was re-done??
