There was a member on here years ago that just wanted a sound and worried less about gains. He removed his exhaust cans (nothing else) and the sound was actually quite nice.
He then had a couple tubes made up that brought his tips out where they needed to be.
The end result sounded surprisingly well and cost him almost nothing.

hmmmm... I took off my resonators a year and a half ago, we made a nice custom X pipe and just ran into stock mufflers, it certainly is no slower,, gets the same or slightly better milage, and sounds fine,,, just a little louder and NO droan.... i did take some pics but don't know how to find em on here.......

A properly placed xpipe will be beneficial.

His results were quite opposite of mine then. All else stock, I just had the mufflers removed and a couple tubes welded in place of them, BAD idea, loud as heck just off idle and it droaned at almost any speed. I'm surprised that I didn't get pulled over for modified exhaust because of the volume! And it sounded TERRIBLE, talk about rice. It might sound nice in youtube clips, but in reality, it's too loud and sounds like total @ss.

Get some flat black Vibrant mufflers.

I think the stock piping back there is 2.25"? If not, they have 2.5" also. I had a pair of these (dual tips though) on my Maxima and they were GREAT.
