Cruise control problem ("set" light blinking)

Hi, all. I am a new owner - '08 G35s w/ 6MT and NAV. Love the purchase but shortly after buying the car I noticed that occasionally - maybe once a week or less - the cruise control indicator will come on all by itslef and the word "set" will blink on and off next to it. This has yet to happen when I've actually had cruise control engaged, or even turned on, and the cruise control has worked properly on the couple of occasions I've used it, but when this problem occurs, the cruise control buttons are totally inoperable. The "set" light blinks continually until you turn the car off and then this doesn't happen again for some time.

I bought the car from a dealer and they took it back and tried to fix this. I don't have the details on what they did, but believe they may have replaced some sort of chip or something, as well as some sort of switch connected to the brake pedal. Anyway, that was 2 weeks ago and the problem occurred again yesterday. I believe they will fix whatever is wrong but since they were apparently unable to do so the first time, I'd like to have a better idea of what the problem might be before I go back to them.

I found one thread from 2010 where someone had experienced the same problem but it didn't include any helpful responses, and it didn't indicate whether the owner got it resolved or how.

Thanks!

Hello staric, and welcome!

I'm sorry that I don't have any info for you, maybe someone will chime in with something, but I'd say you'll do well by sticking with the dealership until it's finally fixed (I'm assuming you are still under warranty). Then, as opposed to the other thread you mentioned, you can hopefully return and share any specific info about the fix to enlighten anyone else that may have similar symptoms.

Mine did the same thing. The dealer claimed they couldn't figure it out so I had to do a bunch of research on the Internet and send it to them. It ended up being a bad sensor in the clutch pedal

Clutch pedal sensor makes sense as the flashing light is saying that cruise can't be set while it thinks the clutch is disengaged?

mine usually does it when the sunlight is directly beaming into the sensor or when the snow button is on.

Bringing this back alive. Mine started tonight. From looking around this was a big issue on the 05-06g's. Anyone ever figure out what it was???

IF you have the ICC engaged then its designed to start flashing if system deems it unsafe to use ICC like when you have your wipers on past a certain interval, lower level sunlight aimed right at the sensor, something like a leaf stuck in front of the sensor, enough water droplets on sensor to cause the laser to reflect back and such other scenarios.

However if it comes on by itself and starts flashing even though you did NOT have the icc even turned on then there might a problem.

bluestacy - I'm the original poster and never did get any help with this. I don't have the interactive cruise control so that can't have anything to do with it. Fortunately, I've only had this occur twice in the past month. Both times, stopping the car for about 5-10 seconds and restarting it made the problem go away, and it's never done this when I've been using cruise control. Both times, it came on at a very random time when I was not shifting gears (i.e., I wasn't using the clutch pedal at the time), though I think both times I was in the process of accelerating. Would still love to know what may be causing this before I go back to the dealer. I've got about 10 months left on my warranty so am in no huge rush.

If you are 6mt, does your car ever not want to start even though you have clutch+brake pushed (will either turn on in acc mode, or just flash 'push' with the picture of the clutch? if so the clutch sensor is bad. I had mine fry out after water got in it from a leaking windshield. I even used canned air immediately after and it couldn't save it.

Same setup as you... Even though I noticed that when I had this problem happen the car didnt like manually shifting thru sport mode. I wish I knew what caused it too.

Hey OP, I had the same problem but its usually if you turn off your VDC; then it won't work. It'll just keep blinking. Try turning off the VDC and then the ICC ON and see what happens. Let me know.

To respond to a few questions/suggestions:

JDMPenn: I've only ever turned off the VDC a handful of times and never around the time this was going on. I suppose if/when it happens again I can turn VDC on and off and see if it does anything, though my strong suspicion is it won't. Once it starts blinking, it seems nothing can stop it but turning off the car.

rvanderwef: I have never had a problem starting the car on the first push.

bluestacy: I gather from your last post that you have automatic tranny? That would seem to suggest it's not a clutch pedal issue, but who knows. If you have manual tranny (3-pedals), what do you mean by "manual shifting through sport mode"?

Have gone 3 weeks now without this recurring, so I guess that's a good sign at least.

Yeah I have an AT. I put the car in first (manumatic mode) and I had VDC off. I was just playing around with it and doing donuts and stuff before getting my new tires and all off a sudden I could shift into 2nd gear. I had neutral and reverse. I shut the car off and everything came back. I went to set cruise on the interstate and the light was blinking. I think the problem has to deal with a Tranmission sensor or something for all of us. My car has been fine since then. I've even tried to re create the issue and it didnt happen. Might even be a VDC issue... IDK
