Hi All
My G35x is at 33k miles and since I just recently purchased this pre-owned im pretty sure the tranny and transfer case fluids have never been changed. Just looked at the tranny dipstick and its more light brown than pink.
Question: should I take this to the dealer for service? (Play it safe for the powertrain warranty) or should I be ok to take to a local mechanic?
How much are dealers charging nowadays for this service?
Thanks!

Yup I agree, just wondering if guys are paying it just to be on the safe side until powertrain warranty is up.

I'm still under the powertrain warranty and had this changed out last week by my mechanic and it wasn't a tough task at all... you should be ok. I'm sure you know this but just get 5 bottles/quarts of the Nissan 5at transmission fluid. I could have done this myself
.
You don't even need to change the gasket or anything else just draining it will do.

7 yrs for the power train is a long time to wait. Just go to a local mechanic that you trust and have him do that for you.

i paid 179 at the infiniti dealer for the tranmission drain and fill, they dropped the pan and replaced the inner filter as well.

Nissan doesn't use a transmission filter...so your dealer pulled your leg on that one.Originally Posted by Austin713

To the OP...I wouldn't worry about doing the fluid changes unless you drive the car hard from time to time. The fluid will be fine until 60k, no problem. It won't void your warranty or anything like that.
For peace of mind though i would change it. Go into your dealership and buy the transmission fluid and differential fluid. It's $10.99 a quart for transmission fluid and $21.65 for differential 75w-140 fluid. Tell them you want to do a drain and fill and they will tell you how many quarts you need (typically 6 quarts).
We do transmissions left and right because people took their car to a pepboys and they used ATF instead of matic-s or whatever it may be. Stick with the dealer on your transmission services! It might be more expensive, but if your transmission drops and they see it has been serviced there then they will back it.

Congrats on the purchase. Your car is exactly the same as mine, year, model, trim and mileage! I just bought 16-quarts of Nissan Matic S ATF for a transmission flush. The fluids cost me about $140 and an indy is charging me $50 for flush service. A dealer would likely charge $300 and it's hard to say if you would get the complete 16-quart flush to make sure all of the old ATF is replaced. A drain and refill is only 5-quarts and a dealer would likely charge $150. As to the transfer case, the OEM fluid is Nissan Matic D and it takes 1.6 quarts so you need 2-quarts. An indy should not charge much to drain and refill. Dealers seem to charge about $170 to drain and refill the transfer case and rear differential.Originally Posted by willdogs
