ummm, I had no trouble with rough shifts up or down in the 7AT I drove...

I thought it was quite smooth. I was ******* the ish outta that car most of the time too...certainly nothing that would prevent me from getting a newer Infiniti, in fact I really like all Infinitis and plan to stay in the fam

Way different than the 3 that i drove...

Even the tech said that there are having to do a lot of updates on the 7AT..so maybe the one you drove had an update

That's what I was thinking, maybe a reflash recently. I had that car only about 1 month ago. I'm telling you, it was really smooth, and don't recall any harsh up or down shifting. I'm not saying by any means the 5AT is not nice, it's better than any AT I've driven.

The only real gripe I have about my 5AT is that a lot of times when I'm rolling in 1st and go to accelarate hard to redline, it upshifts way too early into 2nd. I wonder if resetting the ECU would help this?

Shifting over to DS should fix that. Sport mode is supposed to hold the rev quite a bit longer before shifting up.

At what point does it automatically upshift if you don't manually do it in DS mode? I feel like even when I was in DS mode, it upshifted into 2nd at like 6-6.5k rpm or so...does power fall off if you rev higher in stock form?

I'm not sure off the top of my head ( I have a 6MT and only drive a 5AT occasionally), but my recollection is YES, it revs to perhaps 6.5k or so in DS, and if you wanted hold it all the way until redline, you needed to manually select a gear to engage manual mode (so that a gear number is displayed), and THEN accelerate to the top end and shift manually (paddles or toggling shifter). As you can see, torque is falling off a bit up there, but it's still useable in a pinch where holding a second longer is preferable to waiting for an upshift. I can't imagine when you appreciate that slight advantage other that under track conditions though.
