What kinds of gas are you guys putting into your G's and how long have you had them. I have been putting in premium gas in since day 1 and the cars still running smoothly at 136,000km. My buddy has an 06 maxima and he has been using regular gas since he bought it and isn’t seeing any problems ether around 130,000km. I know premium is highly recommended for the G's but has anyone tried else wise?

 

yup i have seen a few members here who admit to using regular gas in their Gs with no side effects, iv used premium from day 1 to avoid any knocking

 

I am no expert. but i don't think putting in regular will hurt the engine (under normal driving)

the high octane value prevent the gas / air mixture from denotation under high heat and pressure. if the gas / air denotate at the wrong timing (with respect to the pistol position and spark ignition time), then it will result in engine pinging.

i think nowadays engines has ping sensor and it will retard the timing if it detects pinging.

i have read (toyota) manual that said the owner can put in regular gas at a reduced performance.

Our manual says not to put regular in, and it's not optional for 'reduced performance' like other cars or previous gens. I believe this changed from previous generations of the VQ motor. Remember it's still gonna knock before the knock sensor goes off and the timing is reduced. If you have an osirus tune they have an low octane map they can set up, so you don't need to rely on the knock sensor going off before reducing timing, it will be that way from the start.

 

Another thread about gas.....I don’t know why we keep seeing these threads…..The only reason I can think of to use regular gas over premium is to save money.

Gas prices by me right now are about 4.05 for regular and 4.25 for premium. If I put 16 gallons of regular gas in my car, it costs $64.80. If I put 16 gallons of premium gas in my car, it costs $68.00. That is a whopping savings of $3.20. I fill up about every two weeks meaning I would only save about $83 a year.

Because the price difference between regular and premium gas is almost negligible compared the price per gallon (about 4%), people who try to save money by using regular gas instead of premium should look to save money other ways. Plus, is the risk of damaging your engine (proven or not) really worth $80 a year considering an Infiniti dealership charges that much just to open the hood?

I agree that the reason is to save money. You probably don't drive as much as the aveage owner if you need to fill up twice a month. I don't consider myself to be someone that drives a lot either and I need to fill up once per week.
Also, we pay $0.50 per US gallon difference, between 87 and 91 octane, in Ontario. For me that's a ~$500/year difference.

That being said, I still use 91 or better, almost everytime.

 

I'm just a curious owner, and isnt that what this site is for? I dont care about the 4$ I would save filling up, I am curious to see what others are doing and if they are seeing any problems doing it.

 

I currently have 75,000 miles on my 2008 G35 (bought it new). I sold my first 2004 G35 with almost 90,000 miles. I have used regular gas in both cars from the beginning and never had any problems (including knocking) with either car.
I did not take my cars to the race track but have had a lot of fun (and I mean it!) with them.
I don't know about the VQ37 engine, but for the VQ35, the owner's manual states:
FUEL RECOMMENDATION
VQ35HR engine
INFINITI recommends the use of unleaded premium
gasoline with an octane rating of at least
91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research
octane number 96).
If unleaded premium gasoline is not available,
you may use unleaded regular gasoline with an
octane rating of at least 87 AKI number (Research
octane number 91), but you may notice a
decrease in performance.

Where I live, the difference between the regular and premium is at least 50+ cents/gal.
I fill up every 5-6 days, 17 gal. It's about $45/month difference. Can I afford premium? Of course!
But the manufacturer allows using regular gas and I go by that. That's just my experience.

 

i once had regular put into mine (not by me), and it drove like $hit.

 

I usually run either Premium (91 in CA) or perhaps 50/50 Premium/Regular. I also add 1 oz of TC-W3 oil per 5 gallons of gas. I have 53K on a 2006 G35 Coupe, and it runs as smooth as silk.

 

To continue, unlike my VQ35 engine that, by the manufacturer, can use regular gas on the regular basis, the VQ37 requirs premium only:

So, if you don't want to follow the rules on gas and complanning that the gas is too much and not getting 20+ MPG then why do ppl buy these cars? Should have gotten a Yaris
