pic of brake pad thickness?

My brakes started to squeal, after putting 23k on it. Dealer checked it out and said it needs to be replaced, and said most pads last 18k. My driving is almost all highway, and when I visually inspected my pads they looked like there were plenty of life left..... so I refused service for now.

Does anyone have a picture of when to replace the OEM pads? I want to compare it with mine ... can't seem to find any on the search engine

I found this pic on Google..

Don't know if its similar to ours, but my guess is when the groove in the middle is gone its time to replace?

I have 33k miles on my g and just had the tsb for brake judder done again. Tech said I still had a good amount left on the original pads.

Yep, that pic is a good reference. You can still wear them fro a while beyond the groove, but you risk scoring the rotors if you don't keep a close eye on them. Of course a dealer will always try to sell you a set if you are even near the groove. In my case, I got 55K miles out of the original sport brakes by wearing well past the groove. I was not concerned about the rotors because I had already bought replacements and I personally think the OE rotors are crap so I didn't care a bit if I trashed them.

BTW, I posted a pic of my pads in another thread ... here: https://g35driver.com/forums/6378928-post5.html

Your brakes are probably good, just have the pads re-greased. Even new pads will squeal if they weren't greased properly when installed.

Interesting that some of you guys had the TSB for brake jutter done more than once. Bought my 08 used with 18k. When I brought it in for the judder at about 42k the dealer said they only fix it once under the TSB and that it had already been done on my car. Then quoted a price of about $500 to do the fronts, said no to that and got charged $60 for a brake inspection!!!

OP, Stay away from the dealership for brakes you'll have better luck elsewhere.

There should be crime scene tape around the outside of all dealerships!!!

Good luck

Confirmation??

Did you read my post though? I deliberately wore them WAY past the groove to the point of near imminent metal-on-metal contact. No dealer is going to go for anything even close to that because their liability is too great. I was just trying to show that they can go beyond the groove. How far beyond is not something that most people should experiment with, especially if they're not certain what they're doing.

Ideally one should replace the pads when they're 3mm thick or less.

It's also best if you actually remove the pads to check for thickness. I've never encountered it on the G, but have seen it on a different car before where the pad overlaps and extends beyond the rotor just slightly -- so much so that from the typical viewpoint, your pads still look as thick as the day they went on. But realistically they're already wearing just underneath it.

I wish i still had the picture to show it, but here's a quick illustration to show what i mean.
