Ticking sound coming from the motor

Morning All,

I've tried searching and couldn't find a definite answer so wanted to post this:

After a local meet last week, I ended up doing some "spirited" driving on the highway on my way home with the windows down for the first time in a while since it wasn't 1000 degrees in Chicago. Driving through my alley to the garage I heard a rather loud ticking noise that got faster as I accelerated and slower as I slowed to an idle.

The next day I did a similar commute to work on the highway and sure enough when I parked I heard that engine tick again. Seems to be coming from the drivers side.
Any ideas what this is? This only happens when the engine is hot.

Thanks,

Lew

Not sure, it could mean a lot of things. I had a ticking noise from my engine and when I brought it into the dealer they said it was the solenoid purge valve, but that was normal.

See if your problem matches mine:

Thanks for the reply. I have a call into the service writer I deal with and since they are so close to me I may drive it over for them to give a listen. It's loudest down by the drivers side wheel well.

When I first noticed it, the A/C was off the entire drive home. During the last service, the dealer did say the belt was starting to show signs of wear, but who knows.

I don't think the belts would cause it to make a ticking noise.. Have u checked your oil and water levels?

Water level is waaay over the MAX line when cold. Brought this up to the dealer adn they said not to worry about it since it's not pressurized. =/ Oil was just changed by the dealer 500 miles ago. I can check it tomorrow when it's cold.

Is it possible that it's just an exhaust leak somewhere?

Very possible. Still waiting to hear back from the dealer.

Was having this issue as well, mine sounds like its coming from the belt / pulley area in the front portion of engine bay. Would love to know the final verdict.

Good thread!

Keep us updated

Spoke to the service writer. Going to monitor it for a few more days and try to get a recording so I can show the service department. Stay tuned!

I had the same sound I believe... we'll see from your upcoming video. It eventually went away but it did get me curious as to what was causing this.
