free play for brake pedal

When I bought the car 2nd hand I noticed a lot of free play in the brake pedal, so I thought it was due to the 30% left on the rear brake pads, I changed those for new once and my front pads are around 70%, But I feel like there's still a lot of free play for the pedal. What does it mean when there's free play on the pedal? and is it bad?

yea exactly what g35srge says, usually if you have low brake pads you'll get the squeel but the brake pedal shouldn't have too much play or be too soft, the pedal feeling is primarily due to your brakefluid and lines so since you'll have to flush your brake fluid go for some SS lines too and you'll be golden
