Akebono brakes and you...problem and possible advice- UPDATED

Anyone want to give me some insight? See below.

UPDATED STATUS AND PICTURES ON PAGE 4

The set up.
  • 2008 X sedan - 19" Vertini Hennessey's 19X 8 set up all around.
  • Newly purchased Akebono BBK with all the trimmings and nearly complete bright blue calipers.

The problem.
  • Vertini wheels won't clear without spacers as you already deduced.

The dilemma.
  • I don't want to run spacers on my car for reasons of my own.

The proposed solution which is going nowhere currently.

I opted to buy a new set of wheels and sale the Vertini's but I am not having much luck getting new wheels that meet my requirements.

This is where I need some member advice and suggestions.

I want new wheels that I can run on my X sedan that meet the following requirements.

Same size all around

No funky offsets

No spacers

Will clear the Akebono's

Every place I talk to tells me I need to run funky offsets or spacers to accommodate the Akebonos.

Is this true? Surely it can't be.

What should I be looking for to have wheels I can live with on a daily basis and work with my new BBK?

Otherwise the entire BBK set up with custom blue calipers will be put up for sale soon.

you know the answer, you just do not want to admit it. Sell the Akebono's and buy a kit that has better clearance.

semi OT: which BBK will fit stock 18" sports rim (or will have better clearance than Akebono)?

What I don't want to admit is that there are no wheels that will work for my car that won't have me running an absurd set up

Is anyone running non OEM sport wheels on an X sedan without spacers or eat through my tires chamber or offsets?

Any aftermarket wheels that look like my hennessey that clear Akebono's?

This BBK is turning out to be more trouble than it's worth...

Here's my 2 cents worth of insight . . .
I think you need to prioritize your thinking and your desires. First of all, which do you care more about, the brakes or the wheels? If you're willing to dump the wheels for the brakes, ask yourself why you want the BBK in the first place; is it for performance beyond what the 13" G35 Sport sedan brakes could give you (but without the looks), or is it predominantly for looks of the Akebonos? If it's a bit for looks as well as performance, then why not consider some other BBK kits (as was already suggested) which also look nice. It's not like the Akebono caliper/rotor combo is such a lightweight contraption to be suspending on the corners of your vehicle; particularly when you add the extra weight of a set of 19" wheel/tires. WIllwood makes a nice product, as do others which will also look good and provide more clearance and might even save you some weight. Then you can keep the wheels you originally wanted. The difference between what a different BBK would cost and what you could sell the Akebonos could be far less than any difference you might see between swapping the wheel set instead.

I didn't get the akabono's for anything other than show. For those fleeting moments of people and car enthusiasts looking at the car and seeing big beefy drilled slotted rotors with blue calipers that are sort of obnoxious.

Oh... And if they stop the car better it's an added bonus. Sort of ridiculous reasons to have it but that was the extent of why I got the BBK.

Are't all vossen wheels supposed to clear these things? Sort of thinking I should just finish painting the calipers and put it all up for sale.

Try to get a 5mm spacer. It might give you what you need to clear. That is what i have on my G right now.

8 Gs for brakes is crazy. Might as well get myself a little accord as a second car.

If I can find the information I would start a list of wheels that clear Akebono brakes that don't need spacers or run crazy offsets that people can use as a reference.

That is really what I am after

There are plenty of wheels that will have a decent offset at those sizes. Look for rims that offer a Hi Disc with a +35 to +40 range..

Ok, now we are getting somewhere. This is precisely the information I am after. Thanks!

So would +35 or 40 offsets have the wheel sticking out of the fender? I was thinking some new concave wheels would be a sure bet but wheel shops are telling me no for my X sedan. WTF? I must be talking to the wrong people or they can't get me wheels that clear but are not staggered- don't need spacers plus reasonable offsets that are good for just driving to work and a square set up.

Am I asking to much on the wheel set up maybe?
Or does anyone know someone running a square normal set up on an X sedan with Akebono's and what wheel specs they are using?
