I know this is/was a big issue with the 7-speed AT with a TSB, but I don't see anything for the 5-speed ATF. I'm noticing more and more than my G will automatically downshift while I'm going downhill, probably usually at 40mph or so. It's not smooth at all and rather startling. I can deal with it but it's my wife's regular car and it bothers her a lot. Anyone have any suggestions and would Infiniti cover this under the power train warranty or any TSB? Thanks.

 

Its totally normal for this car to downshift on it own going down hills, even when not in DS mode. Mine does the same thing. In fact, the car is smart enough to know when u need extra power to slow down in a rush, ie. Coming to a sudden stop to avoid accidents, it downshifts even in flat terrains when u floor the brakes while moving at highway speeds to help u slow down fast.

Downshifting down hills are totally normal unless u hear a loud thump or something out of the ordinary, are u getting anything strange?

 

Thanks for the reply. Nope - no weird symptoms, just the hard downshift. The dealer's service advisor told me the same thing after I posted the question - totally normal - just a heavy powerful car so you will feel the downshift.

 

Just so u know, this time ur service advisor was right, but you'd be amazed how some of them are really incompetent (ie. Telling me I have engine issues when a dirty throttle body was making my RPMs fluctuate).... there's more useful and accurate info here than u can get from the dealer. Search engine turns up a lot of info.

its normal, just depends on your rpms and gear.

and yes, I wouldnt trust every service adviser or master tech.

Going from 5th straight to 3rd with a pronounced throttle blip and rev match is perhaps the most exciting thing about my commute to work every morning. This feature is to be embraced, not be bothered by. It is there to improve handling as it prevents the car from nose diving during the downshift and upsetting the car's balance, especially when entering a turn.
Also, I've noticed the car's adaptive shifting strategy is like a puppy that gets and remains excited until you bore it to the point where it loses interest.
If I drive easy for a few days when it rains for example, it shifts a lot smoother as if it learns that I prefer a smooth ride. Getting on it, however, will entice "the puppy" to behave in a more playful manner.
So could it be that after you drive the car in a "spirited fashion" and your wife gets in to drive afterwards, the car still thinks you want to "play around" and therefore holds the revs longer and overall acts as if it expects you (or her in this case) to keep driving the same way you did the last time the car was driven?

my 07 does it. If i just tap the brakes down hill..you can feel it downshift

 

First time I had it happened to me I nearly crapped my self thinking it was a busted tranny....the forums here proved otherwise

 

I'm in manual mode 100% of the time so I don't have to deal with this issue. I hate the way the car shifts in Auto mode.

Remember that the car is adaptive to your style of driving. If you drive spirited most of the time, the shifting is much more aggressive.
Reset the ECU, calm down, and this will most likely be less of an issue.... or embrace it as mentioned above

LOL..How do I reset my ECU? When I got the car I used to get 14mpg now, but since then I have matured up and get around 22mpg.

I still have a heavy foot but I try to control it at all times.

Yea, When you leave your car in DS going downhill it will keep it in a lower gear at higher RPMS. It's pretty normal.

 

Resetting is a pain in the ***, don't bother the car will learn soon enough. Took a week of bumper to bumper in the city to make my car go from responsive throttle to laggy as hell....and another week of spirited driving to go back to the way it was.
