2008 G35x-Sounds Like a Diesel

Between 700-1200 rpms, there is a ticking/knocking/rattle type sound that isn't that loud outside the car, but fairly annoying inside. Got three different opinions from two repair shops and the local Infiniti dealer. One said exhaust, one said something loose in the dashboard, and the dealer said that they need to start taking things apart to find the exact problem. The car has 70,000 miles and other than this noise, runs excellent. Any advice is much appreciated.

Need a video/sound clip to understand what it can be.

Given that you say its a rattling type sound from near the dashboard as per one analysis, maybe its THIS... given it was a common issues on many 07-08 g35s

Stay away from the stealerships unless its under warranty. They will feed you BS just to take your money and run!! If you have a local mechanic that can help you its better to go with them. Or try to isolate the noise to one location and see if you can find it yourself.

Does it do this during or after using the Air Conditioning? Does it sound like the wheel of fortune sound? If so it's the TSB Kool Yaar provided.

I had the same issue, got a back flush, sound never returned. I have a 2008 G35X.

It makes the noise whether the a/c is on or off. Easier to hear with it off.

If the tapping is coming from behind the dash, then it's most likely that TSB. Post a vid!

Thank you for the advice. You would think the mechanic at the dealership would have mentioned this yesterday instead of telling me that they would have to start taking the car apart. A neighbor had a similar problem about five years ago and remembered them replacing a fuel damper. He wasn't exactly sure.

IMO and from experience, dealerships house some of the most dishonest people on earth. The only reason I'm still going to mine is because it's still under factory warranty. Sounds like they want to charge you their labor rate to dismantle the car to "look" for the source of the issue.

Do yourself a favor. If the car is out of warranty, take it to an indie that specializes in Nissan\Infiniti in your area or get a second opinion from another dealer. I'm pretty sure you can take the car to a Nissan dealer as well.

EDIT: I saw that you are down south. If you can make it up North to Schaumburg, have the peeps at Project X Customs take a look:

Good Luck.

Lew, thank you. Actually, I'm just about 10 minutes from Schaumburg. Have you used that shop before?

Perhaps RAF could tell us where the sound seems to be coming from. He said it was one of the repair shops that said something might be loose in the dash.

For all we know it could be as simple as the (also well known) loose rattling passenger seat or sunroof finisher.
