Rough Steering Column Tilt Movement

Hoping for some help and advice from the forum members.

I have the automatic tilting steering column (not sure if all G35s do), when ever I adjust the tilt of my steering it moves very roughly; it rattles very bad as it comes down. It seems as if there is no grease and it is jumping from level to level as it goes down. When I first bought the car it use to move very smoothly, slowly I noticed it getting rougher. One thing I noticed is the colder it is outside the rougher it moves (I live in Phoenix, cold here does not really count as cold).

I hope I am explaining this OK, it is a little hard to explain. I can post a video if no one else has experienced this issue.

A couple months back the dealer told me I needed to replace the whole steering column, needless to say that is not going to happen as my car is no longer covered under warranty.

Any thoughts of what this might be, if there is anyway I can fix this? I appreciate any help you guys can provide.

Thanks!

Never seen it before but sound like something is out of wack obviously. Most likely at the pivot point.

Best bet is to remove all the plastic coverings around the steering column and get as close to the pivot point as possible. See if a gear is off a track and fix it.

Mine makes a screeching noise sometimes when it's cold....almost like metal on metal.

No noise from mine just shaking and vibrating. I am hoping to find some time tomorrow to take apart the plastic coverings and take a peak.

I feel very unlukcy to be one of the only ones experiencing this issue.
