Sudden change in miles per tank (gas)

My total miles per tank have dropped dramatically without my driving habits changing. I used to get 300-320 miles by 1/4 tank, but now barely 270. Also before, the "Distance to empty" read 370+ miles (at full tank); now it's only around 320. It seems like my car never truly fills up a full tank anymore.

I've heard "gas valve malfunction." Can anyone elaborate? Or maybe you experienced something different? Please share.

Thanks!

First of all, you need to know the actual number of gallons used (and miles driven), rather than just going by the 'tankful'. I know that, imperially speaking, it seems to be a reasonable approach to just consider the 'tank', but it is actually quite vague. If you suspect that you're not getting the tank full at fillups, then I'm curious what your gauge looks like; does it confirm this? has it changed at all, or does it still show a full range of movement? Are you filling up at the same station lately? OR did your station recently change pumps? These are all possibilites to be considered as well. All that being said, there is a TSB for difficulty filling the fuel tank. If you register at Infinitihelp.com, you can download it for free. It is quite thorough in explanation, and has lots of clear pics too. http://x.infinitihelp.com/forum/loca...pp=10&keyid=92

I'm having the same issue, but I've been driving more aggressively so I thought that was the culprit. I'm only getting 16-17mpg when I used to get 19-21 combined.

^^ Guys, please be aware that, while they are related, MPG is every different from MPT (miles per tankful). For instance, you can still be getting great MPG, but not as many MPT (since the tank may not be filling completely). Whereas you're very unlikely to be getting great MPT while not getting good MPG.

Bottom line: I don't think this thread is intended as a discussion about reduced MPG per se, instead it's more about the MPT.

This confusion speaks (again) to my earlier point about the inherent relative vagueness of referring to MPT.

Hmm... Weird. I can say that during the last 2 months when they switched out winter fuel (higher ethanol) to the summer variant at the pumps, my mpg increased 3-4 miles.... But to hear people say the opposite and their mpg is suffering now... Strange.

Are u guys getting gas from big stations like Mobil? Or is it some Podunk no name stations buying cheap gas in bulk?
