how to remove the shifter in automatic?

My 08X shifter has some scratches on the chrome piece on the top of the shifter between the leather. I wanted to refinish it and want to know how to get it off? Also, I had read about somebody doing the same. What is the best way to refinish the chrome area?

I'd suggest vinyl wrap shouldn't even have to remove it for that and it'll hold up better than paint would

A vinyl wrap? I would be concerned it would not fit properly since the area is not flat.

Thats what I needed. Thanks. Debating on Plasti Dip that area. Not sure it would look right since it is next to the leather, but I now have flat black rims and plan on doing the front grill next.
