TPMS frustration
TPMS frustration
So my TPMS light has been on for about a year now. I got new tires put on today and they told me they couldn't read the rear passenger TPMS. Luckily they have a replacement in stock, $70 installed. But they don't have the equipment to reset/sync it.
So I've read about the re-learning procedure here:
https://g35driver.com/forums/wheels-...l-tools-2.html
However, my TPMS light DOES NOT act like how it's described.
For the last year, when I put my key in the ON position and when I start the car, the light blinks for 60 seconds then stays solid.
I tried to ground the connection (as described in the link) about 10 times before I could get anything to change. The first "change" is that instead of blinking 60 seconds then solid, it would now go solid right away (both in the ON position as well as car running).
So I figured that's more like the starting point for this procedure.
So I do the grounding thing again. Now it starts to flash again in the ON position. I wait a couple minutes and it's still flashing. So I figure it's in the learning mode.
I start the car, the flashing stops immediately and it's solid (WTF)
So I drive around for 10 minutes above 30mph hoping it'll change, go off then back on (as described), nothing.
So I refill my tires to 34 psi each hoping that'll turn the light off. Nope.
It now is just solid in both the ON position and when running right away (no 60 seconds flashing).
Any thoughts?

How was the original tpms damaged? Why did you take their word for it? It probably just needed a new battery and any decent shop replaces your tpms battery free when you buy new tires.
"luckily they had a replacement" LOL they are a tire shop no **** they have a replacement i feel like you got played.
If i was in your position i would talk to the shop owner. Why did they charge you $70 if replacing it was not going to fix the light?
Here is a detailed thread about the tpms

here is the service manual with tpms info

I replaced my tires 6 months ago and in the first week my tpms light came on. Just like yours. 60 blinks then solid.
I decided to fix this just recently. I first tried the grounding guide but it wasn't going into relearning mode properly.
I just took it to the tire shop i got my tires done and they just cleared the light

You don't have a discount tire near you? They can easily do it for free. Other tire places should be able to also. Just don't go to the stealership. But there's really no reason to monkey around with the tpms yourself.
There is no need to stop at Infiniti or Nissan for TPMS issues, most large tire stores have the readers and replacment sensors when needed! Any time you can avoid the Stealership you're major $$ ahead!

Closest discount tire is almost 2 hrs away unfortunately.
As far as batteries go, the units are sealed. Everything I've read says you can't just change a battery.
And, FWIW, the tire shop didn't charge for the install, just the part. The guy doing the install is hourly and could care less about upselling me.
I'll try to find another shop that can reset.

You might be right regarding the battery. My shop has a display with a dismantled tpms and it says something along the lines of "we do maintenance on your tpms and change your battery's with every tire change." Might just be a gimmick.
I don't agree, if the shop is franchised or just individual owner the employ would benefit from up selling you. Regardless if I paid for something to get fixed and they only "technically fixed" it I would be pissed.
See if you have any local large chain tire shops and see if they can reset the light for free. If not go back to the shop and demand a refund. At least that's what I would do.
Good luck

Try simply grounding the check connector, it was start the self diag mode. Then you can count the blinking to figure exactly what's wrong. Mike45 gave you a link to the service manual, read the section titled "Diagnosis Procedure with Warning Lamp Function (Without CONSULT-II)."
Also, they may have simply changed the wrong sensor. If they went by the car's display saying rear passenger, that may not really be accurate - if tires were rotated for example what the car thinks is rear passenger, could really be rear driver or on the front.
