High Mileage '08 G35xS

Hi,

I've been looking at Gs in the sub-$15k range, and I've come across a 2008 G35xS. I've gotten the price down to about $10,800. This seems really low, but it is because the car has 140k miles on it.

That is a ton of miles to me, but this car is in nearly perfect condition. There are, of course, a few paint chips like you would see from normal, highway driving, but that's it. And the interior looks like it's never even been driven, other than some wear on the shifter.

Am I crazy for considering this car?

IMHO, that's too high. The KBB private party value is somewhere around $9200, so there's QUITE a bit of fluff in there still. I know a dealership will tell you that the reason a car is priced higher is because they have "gone through" the car to make it fully ready for sale, but often this amounts to very little to justify such a price increase. If the car was traded in that needed a bunch of work, they probably wouldn't even have kept it for sale on their lot, so most likely what you are seeing is a car that came in pretty close to the condition you're seeing (give or take a detailing).

One thing for sure, you need to get more information on the car. Specifically, the maintenance history, the condition of the brakes, the tires, battery, etc.. Also, you'd do well to ask for an oil pressure test to be performed, less you buy into an instantly expensive repair shortly down the road.

Here's an example of what can happen:

This is not to scare you off from the car, more just to be a bit better informed about potential worst case scenarios.

This. Also keep in mind that repairs are not very cheap on these cars. It's very possible to need a couple thousand dollars worth of repairs in the immediate future. Typically, electronic problems (sensors, etc) are the first to go and they're not cheap either.

I'd say avoid this car like the plague unless it comes with a sweet warranty, which it probably doesn't. You can find a much better car for $15k (~90-100k miles with good maintenance history).

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I guess, I just needed to hear it from people with more knowledge and no stake in the situation.

Thanks.

There is no problem with buying a G with 140k miles on it especially if 90% of those miles were highway miles. You just need to do a very thorough inspection of the car and test the oil pressure and look for any leaks. Then take the car for a test ride and make sure it shifts nice and smooth during driving and through PRND. From the pictures, the car looks in great shape for the miles it has. But that doesn't mean its not hiding any problems especially any accident damage/resprays/etc. But since the mileage is high and climbing there will probably be some bills down the road for the transmission, diff, possible electronic problems, etc. If you really want the car you need to look at the engine and look for any sludge and whether its clean or not.

Pix look great. car looks clean. I am willing to bet most of those miles were all freeway. I have 1/2 as much miles on my car and haven't ran into any problems w/ my car. I had 2 problems but that was dew to the Supercharger and i got that fixed. As long as you take care of that car, i am sure you will see 200k easily. If you have a sensor problem, there are a few youtube videos that will show you how to change them out so you don't pay high dollar to change them at the dealers

Well, I missed out on that one, as it sold yesterday.

I'll keep on hunting for my G.
