Jacking up Rear

Jacking up Rear

Hey guys, I have a 14" lift floor jack and based on the service manual I use the rear differential. However, this doesn't give me enough lift to slide jack stands underneath either side.

Lifting from the rear driver/passenger side jack point gives enough height however. With all the torsion, Is it ok to just lift one side of the rear at a time? Like passenger side then driver side. Sorry if it's a dumb question, just being cautious haha.

Are you lifting one side or the whole rear? Don't lift the whole rear without lifting the front; you'll eff up your steering. If you're lifting one side, just use the half the jack point. I know clearance is tough using the rear jackpoints, but yeah, the jack points are fine.

I usually jack the front, then the rear one side at a time at the jack points.

Yeah, if you put all the weight on front it'll screw up your tie-rod settings. Its much more sensitive than the rear.

You can lift the whole rear, you're not putting all the weight on the front, the weight will now be on the jack &/ jackstands
If that were true every time your back tires went up on a speedbump the weight would shift to the front.

With a 14" lift jack you should have enough lift to put the jack stands under each side axle tube.

Damn..must just be my car. My steering wheel was about 45 degrees off afterward. What happened when you did it?

How is that a thing scraggly. I have lifted the rear many times of my car through the rear lift point for service.

Don't ask me. Maybe my tie rod bolts were loose.

Yes, but make sure the front wheels are chalked or something. Personally, I put the whole car on jack stands if I need the entire rear end off the ground.

It won't hurt the car at all to lift just one side of the rear at a time, but I fear how you may be planning on doing this.

If you're aren't lifting from the diff, then the next best place is at the pinch weld point under the rear door. However, this is also the correct place for supporting the car on jack stands, so my question is: how do you then place a jack stand at the same location as your jack?

What work are you planning on doing that you need to lift the rear for anyway? If you're not planning on going under the car, and your jack is in good repair, you should be able to just use the jack at the diff and skip the jack stands altogether, BUT ONLY if you're not getting under it! (i.e. wheels, brakes, etc.)

There are other locations besides the rear pinch welds that you can place a jack stand just as an emergency backup (while the floor jack remains the primary support for the load), but it's probably not the best idea for you unless you have to have a pretty good idea of what you're doing.

LOL at the idea of screwing up front suspension by lifting the rear. How could we ever drive our cars downhill?

Yes, thank you VQ that's what I ended up doing. Just relied on the floor jack as I was only working with the wheels.
