Manual mode on the AT5 question

So I recently got a 2007 g35 sedan with 87k miles and have been driving it for around 2 weeks now and absolutely love it, my question is when I start off from my house I have started to put it in the manual shift mode but it'll still shift up on it's own like it's in auto, the only work arounds I've found is to either drive it in auto for a little while then go to manual or have to shift up once for it to figure out I want it in manual. I don't really know if this is an issue as the manual mode works perfectly once it knows what I want.

Manumatic mode is glitchy, you should clean up the ground on the front of the timing cover though, top of the cover are two wires grounded to the cover with 1-hole lugs. One of them is the transmission ground and is a known culprit for causing manumatic shift problems.

When you first push the shifter over to the left for manual mode, it actually doesn't go straight into full manual. It goes into Sport mode. On the center screen you will see it change from D to DS. The car is still going to change the gears on it's own at this point, but it's in what I call attack mode. If you want it to be in full manual you have to shift it once. (One up or downshift it doesn't matter) You will then see the center screen change once more and show you what gear you're in. If I'm driving spiritedly I just throw it into DS and let the car do it's thing. It keeps the rpms up and into power band quite well. Most of the time I only manually shift for engine braking or when I'm stuck in heavy traffic I'll shift manually to keep off the brakes

I just learned something I didn't know about the 2nd gen cars. 03-06 sedans don't have this feature, you move the shifter over to MM and it's immediate.

What's cool about the sport sedan, which I'm sure you know, is you get those flappy paddles (Magnesium btw ) and so I can manually shift whenever I want regardless of the shifter position.

Yeap, it makes a few behind-the-scenes changes when it's in Sport mode. It seems as though the throttle sensitivity increases a bit but it clearly adjusts the shift points to more aggressive shifts (revs higher before shifting). It will basically behave as far as shifts go if you were much heavier on the throttle while in regular Drive mode.

D = standard automatic
DS = automatic "sport" mode
DS+manual = manual shift mode

Even manual mode has some "automatic" or overrides. For instance, it will shift into 1st gear when you slow to a stop. The manual also states "In the manual shift mode, the transmission may not shift to the selected gear. This helps maintain driving performance and reduces the chance of vehicle damage or loss of control." That to me sounds like it will not downshift into too low of a gear depending on the speed. It can shift between gears quickly too. If you are in 2nd gear and then upshift twice (no matter how quickly), it will go into 3rd then 4th. There's no delay as if the system thinks the 2nd shift was accidental.#s3gt_translate_tooltip_mini { display: none !important; }
