08 G35x Sedan Rack and Pinion Dealer Can’t Get It Right
i bought my daughter a 2008 G35x sedan back in March for her 16th birthday from a major local dealer. Car is one owner in great overall condition with 69k miles. Part of their reconditioning before selling it was putting in a new rack. The car sit garaged from March until June. Once my daughter got her license late June and started driving we found out the new rack was leaking. Thankfully that was under warranty. Dealer put in another new rack. Brought it home and leaked out. Dealer then put in another more expensive new rack purchased from a different vendor. My daughter has driven it two weeks and about 300 miles and that one is now leaking. So the dealer has now put in three new racks and all failed. Any thoughts? Could the service department at a major long established dealership be that incompetent? Is this a really tricky repair? Hard pressed to comprehend how three attempts with racks from different vendors and still haven’t been able to get it fixed.
Sounds like the leak isn't coming from the R&P. Probably leaking from the line set under pressure when turning the wheel while stationary or something. I'd clean the underside really well, take off the bottom engine bay cover and drive to a jiffy lube or something and ask them to use the bay for a few minutes, have someone in the driver seat move the wheel back and forth while you are down in the pit with a flashlight looking for where the leak is.
If you call ahead to local lube shops like that they're usually more than happy to let you down in the pit if you tip them $20, just ask what a good time is when they're not usually busy.
I can't speak for dealership competency though, typically I only use the dealership for oil changes because I don't trust anyone to be as precise as I am.
