07 G35X Rear break pads and rotors replacement

Hey guys,

First time poster here. I was informed by my mechanic that I need to replace my rear rotor and break pads.

I bought the HAWK
TALON HPS BRAKE KIT - SLOTTED & DRILLED

Premium, Performance Street

Anyone has any experience with these? Good quality or should I return and go for another? The front are still OEM.

In all honesty, any rear brake setup will do the job. It sounds like you got a super premium combo. I would probably save that for the fronts and use economy rotors/pads out back.

Those are some extremely spendy rotors and pads, check out r1concepts.com for some really budget friendly rotors that are still good quality. No experience with their house brand pads but for street use I'm sure they'll be completely fine. Obviously track use requires dedicated track pads.

I'm not sure what your intention with the car, keep it as a daily driver or track it.
For daily, I'll stick with OEM or some other brand better or equal to OEM specs. You can find a lot of brake parts on www.partsgeek.com to get an idea.

As for Hawks, I've had them on my car before, they do stop very well but tend to squeal loudly from time to time. I didn't like them at all even when it did the job of stopping. Just made my car seem like some cheap beater and I can't afford proper parts.

R1Concept are junk, I had them on another car and they warped within a few months.

I've been absolutely thrashing the R1 slotted rotors this year in a mix of street/track use and have zero problems with them biting Hawk HP+ pads. What pads were you using with your rotors and under what kind of driving conditions?

I've pushed the pads to failure (fade) dozens of times so I know those rotors were smoking hot and haven't had any warping yet.

That's just their cheapo budget rotors too, not the upgraded ones they sell.

I had OEM’s on rear and front.

what would be a OEM equivalent? Only reason I consider HAWK was because I thought it was an upgrade.

Goal is for daily driving, but I wanted breaks that could support the V6.

thank you guys for the comments btw, my fronts would probably need to be replaced in my next oil change.

Here's what I used to replace my 08' G35x's rears,
https://www.amazon.com/Power-KC179-1-Click-Performance-Calipers/dp/B00HIVGZ8U/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Power+Stop+KC179&qid=1570538583&s=automotive&sr=1-1 https://www.amazon.com/Power-KC179-1-Click-Performance-Calipers/dp/B00HIVGZ8U/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Power+Stop+KC179&qid=1570538583&s=automotive&sr=1-1
. Same price range and you get new calipers.

Edit: When I bought mine they were $230 w/ a core rebate so maybe look around for a better price than the link above.

Yea, they are definitely more expensive then the HAWKS I bought. I also received a 35 dollar rebate.

I had the E line drilled/slotted set on all 4 corners matted with Akebono Ceramic Euro pads. I drove my car as a daily in normal traffic, but never pushed it to the extreme. They ended up warping within 3-4 months after install. At the time they were selling for a really good price and I needed to replace my stock pad and rotors.
I'm glad to hear they are working out for you and either they improved or I had a bad batch.

OP - sorry to hi-jack your thread, but if you're just looking for stock replacement, there are lots of choices out there and it's your money, buy whatever suits you well.

Every brake pad maker will normally have a multiple "grades" of pads to select from, including auto parts store brands. Stick with their top-grade or "premium" pads and from companies like Raybestos, Wagner, Bosch, Akebono, Centric, and so on will be completely fine. Same thing with rotors. You don't need to spend $350 for an "upgrade" either.

Everything I've read about so-called "high-performance" pads, especially for a daily driver as you say, is they tend to be much noisier and produce a lot more brake dust.

With the bias from braking being so much on the front brakes (not the size difference between the fronts and rears ?), I suspect you won't feel anything different no matter what is put on the rears. Swap the fronts and I'll bet you notice it though.

I run Centric vented rotors all around and Raybestos Element3 pads. Smooth as butter with plenty of stopping power.
