How would a resonator do anything to decrease the smell?

When you gut out the cats it's going to smell like gas-heavy exhaust since you literally removed the filter that's getting rid of that smell.

The only "fix" would be another set of cats.

Muffler (straight pipe) and catalytic converters are completely different components. The cats are what removes the smell, the muffler is what removes the noise.
