The U1000 code is a generic code to indicate that there was a CAN communication failure. With a decent scanner you should be able to view additional modules to see what else may have been throwing codes.
Check for water intrusion. As mentioned above, the IPDMs on these cars are a common issue, but the other modules are not exactly safe since the sunroof drains run to the firewall. If the drain fittings get brittle and the foam seal breaks down, you will have moisture in the car at some point. If pull up the carpet and the foam insulator to check for water in the floor panel.
