I find it quite amusing that this forum is loathe to publish "free speech", yet allow pornography behind their "Paywall".

It is very rare when I sort of agree with you on the subject of free speech.Free speech does not include hate speech, however posting false information or hate speech from unidentified or sources that could be related to Russian GRU could possibly be the reason the decision was made to close the politics forum?

I can assure you the shutdown is nothing more ominous than "car forum should be about cars". This has been a very very VERY long discussion (years long).
No individual is to blame, no thread is to blame, this has nothing to do with silencing free speech and over the years I've been very careful to only moderate if something is a violation of the terms of use.
Car forum should be about cars, that's pretty much it.
