Saw pre-production G37 at dealership today
Hey guys, I gotta call today from my sales guy from Suburban Infinti of Novi (MI) telling me he had a pre-production model in his service garage. Obviously I got excited and went to check it out. Some engineers from Nissan North America Tech Center dropped it off for the day, and it goes back tomorrow. I only had a few minutes to check it out.
Only problem was when I got there all the wheels were off and it was lifted on a hydraulic lift. He wouldn't let me take any pics with my phone nor could i sit inside, but I definitely got to take a good look at it inside and out, and even underneath. It was a base sport model (6MT, rear spoiler) Athens blue with stone interior. I was a huge skeptic when I first saw photos, but man I definitely changed my mind. This thing is gorgeous in person.
One thing I noticed is that it still is not a true dual exhaust. If this was the configuration from the beginning, I apologize. i was under the assumpiton it was true dual. He started it up and gave it some gas, and it sounds much more raspy under full throttle, but at constant rev it didn't have the same hum as our current models.
Either way, my current 2006 lease is up in september, but he said he can extend it a few months until the VPP discount is offered that way I will still be able to get this car.

You are lucky, wish my dealership got a pre-production model I could see. As for it not sounding the same, if it was pre-production, they probably had not done the final tuning on the exhaust, since it was not the final version. Either way, I am pretty sure the final exhaust will be pretty sweet!

Yeah, what is VPP?

Yes, there are two versions: Nissan employees and supplier employee. SInce I work for a supplier the discount isn't as much, but still a good chunk off. On my current 06 the sticker was 39500 and it came out to 36100.
There was a short y-pipe, but the service guy said it would't be too much trouble inserting an H-pipe to make it true dual. He aslo pointed out there was some vavle removed on the 08s that changed the sound of the exhaust while cruising. Not sure what the valve did or what it was, but I just nodded my head.

This is exactly what a bunch of us have said since the NYIAS, the pictures dont give you an accurate representation of just how good this car looks in person. Great that you got a look, I wonder why Novi would get a model for a day, maybe training or teach the techs what was different? I would think they would hit high volume dealers first if that was the case. I will have to ask around here and see if anyone is getting in the same kind of 1 day visit.

Ends up being ~2-3% over invoice depending on the options that you get.
It's more for avoiding the hassle of negotiation. If you like negotiating straight up, you may actually get a better deal.
I think you can get an '07 sedan on VPP now. But I doubt the '08 coupes will go on VPP until at least next summer.

I don't think its a sales pitch, because its an employee discount that you are entitled to. All you do is get the PIN from your employer, bring it in, and no hassle price.
VPP question
Since I am seriously considering a G37 (along with BMW 335i--see my other posts) it will probably come down to pricing and was looking for a VPP guru. My wife works with a girl whose husband works as a parts manager for a local Nissan dealer. Before I bother them, would I have much to gain by purchasing in the "friend" category of VPP?
Thanks,
Doug

Doug, it depends what Nissan/Infiniti plans on doing with the G37. They may want to get a quick jump on BMW right at launch and have some agressive customer cash deals out of the gates but that is unlikely to happen. A lot of people were expecting that with the new Toyota Tundra and instead not only were there no deals out of the gates but they were selling for $2000-3000 over sticker. I really hope this isn't the case with the coupe because I plan on buying one myself.
Normally customer loyalty (previous customer) isn't a huge break sometimes between $500-$1500.
Instead ask your friends husband to get you the legit invoice on the car and go from there, if they can somehow get you the car at invoice and a decent rate jump on it.
Also if you are financing, if they give you an option choose between an extremely low interest rate or $500-$1000 cash back take the interest rate. The money back looks much wiser on paper when you first see it but the interest rate would payoff in the end.
