Grill gripes
I've sort of been lurking on these forums and following the G37 for a long time. Basically since the new sedan came out I've patiently been waiting for the launch of the new coupe as I really liked the G35 coupe and always thought I'd eventually get one for myself.
All of this having been said, I think that the gripes about the grill actually are a good summary of the gripes about this car in general. The grill from a design and materials standpoint is just fine, the problem is that it is not aggressive enough... which is the issue with this car in general. This is a very subjective matter and something that depends entirely on what you are looking for in the car. I'm 27 right now and currently drive an I35. The I35 is a great car, but it's just a bit too much of a luxury car for me at a time when I'm looking to get something which is both visually and mechanically more exciting and fun to drive.
As others have noted here before the G35 was more a sports car with a touch of luxury, while this is more of a luxury car with a touch of sportiness. The performance is definitely great and I'm sure if I was ever to test drive it I'd be impressed, however it is now lacking the certain 'wow factor' in the visual department. The G35 was very well designed for its time and had a sort of Euro/Japanese feel to the design in general. With the G37 Infiniti seems to have gone bit more towards a more towards the Japanese side and quite a bit more towards the luxury side. The end result being a car that will appeal very well towards middle aged folks looking for a sporty/practical/convenient luxury coupe, but which has lost some of the raw aggressiveness that the G35 had (BTW I'm not saying that all of the ppl buying this car will be middle aged, just that ultimately I think that they will make up a bigger piece of the overal sales pie).
Again, in the end, all of this has to do with what people are looking for in their car, and I guess for me right now the G37 seems to have come to embody more of the traits I'd be looking to leave behind in the car I'm driving now. So as much as I hate to say it, the more I see of the G37 the more I'm leaning towards simply waiting right now for the next big thing to come out (which will hopefully be a better match to what I'm looking for) and hopefully doing some better/smarter things with my money in the meantime.

But what does that leave you with. In my opinion, none of the current cars in this category (near or above $40K sport/luxury coupe) really have aggressive exciting styling. From what I saw of the G37 in person, it still is a very impressive looking car. The only other car I saw recently that really caused me any excitement was while I was driving around today and saw this car from the rear and rear/side (as it was turning). It really caught my eye to the extent that I ended up following just to see what it was. Turns out it was an Audi A5 3.2--it was quite stunning from the rear and almost looked like an Aston Martin or something. It's too bad that, too often, the Asian marques end up wimping out and end up just short of something really eye-catching.

I've only seen the A5 in photos, IMO it looks pretty cool from the back, but from the front it is a bit blah as it basically just looks like a two door sedan. A really cool car from Audi would be the R8, but of course then we'd be in a different league

I guess the conclusion I've come to though is that for me at this point 42k is a bit much to spend on a car that I'm sort of compromising on for lack of a better option. I've also been looking at the 350z but that car may be just a bit on the too unrefined side as I'm not sure I'd be ok completely giving up the option of the back seat and Infiniti's service (which is actually pretty good at the dealer I go to). Not to mention the fact that there are a lot of 18 year old racer types here in southern california with that car.

Just to toss my 2 cents in but I agree that the grill could look a lot better but my question is "Is that really a problem?". Think about it how long before someone comes up with an aftermarket or a carbon fiber or whatever version that eventually almost everyone will like. Just get what seems like a great car and eventually change the grill, seems like a good option, no?

Unless there is a perfect car out there for you, I think mxkon hit it right on the nose. Small gripes are not that bad if the price is right. Swapping out a grill isn't too bad if the G35 is any indication and you are handy. What's nice about a car is you can mod it a bit or even a lot to make it "perfect", not so for other things in life ... well if you like them au naturel
