That hole is for a tow hook I believe. There should be a tow hook threaded for it in the trunk that you can attach incase you get clumsy enough to drive into a ditch and need a tow truck to winch you out.
Still have the grille, only problem is the screw tabs got sheared off. So it's going to be some kind of glue job (or maybe it can be screwed in some how, hidden).

JB weld on a small metal bracket, then attach with small bolt and lock nut.
