I have an '05 G35x with a faulty fuel gauge (reads 1/4 tank when tank is empty). I've been dealing with this for about 4 months. I tried the Q-tip fix, without any luck. Then I replaced both full sending units...still no luck.
Now I'm thinking that it's the instrument cluster. I found a company (http://clusterfix.net) that says that this is a common problem that they can fix for $185.
I've read a few DIYs on removing the cluster, and it doesn't seem too bad.
My question is, can the car be driving w/o the cluster? It's a 1-2 day turn around time, plus shipping time. So it looks like I'll be without the cluster for about a week.
I will paypal your $10 if you get this done and post back reviews that it works or not.
I have a 05x as well and have had this issue 8+ months. I already spent $300 on both new senders in the tank.
Yeah, I feel your pain. Luckily I got the parts pretty cheap on eBay, but everything was still ~$200. I'm definitely getting this done. I plan on sending the cluster out on 1/19 so it can be worked on while I'm out of town. I'll be back in town on 1/28, and will be installing it right away. I'll be sure to update on how this worked out.
I took it out today to see if the car would run without it. Everything seemed to work fine, except the nav, so I packed up the cluster and headed to the post office to send it out.
I got a few miles down the road and the car quit! Without any warning the motor stopped running. I pulled off to the side to try to restart it, but the starter would not respond at all. I unboxed and plugged in the cluster, and the car started right up. So looks like I'm going to have to wait until Tuesday to send it off while I'm out of town.
I ended up going with this company on eBay.http://www.ebay.com/itm/271284787626?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
By the way...it is really easy to get the cluster out. It only took like 10 minutes. This video was very helpful. It wasn't exactly like mine (power steering wheel adjustment, and nav), but close enough.
I think it would have been cheaper to just buy a different cluster. Tons of places online to buy working used ones.
yeah, I considered that, but most of the clusters I could find were for w/o nav. Also a used cluster really is about the same price. Then once you factor in the cost of having the odometer reprogrammed, you'd end up spending even more.
Great news!! I got the cluster back this past Thursday and have had zero issues with it. I'm really happy with the turnaround time that module masters gave me. I sent it out usps priority on 1/20. They received it on 1/22, and had it fedex'd on 1/26. I got it on 1/29. This was Raleigh, NC to Moscow, ID.
I hope this helps anyone else that might have this problem.
Hi I’m having the same issue on my 2008 Infiniti G35 X where the gas meter won’t read pass the initial Full mark. I changed the Gas Gauge on the passenger side but still no fix do you think I should go ahead and order the pump on the driver side or fix the cluster?
