Thats from all the heat being generated by your head unit.

Cars operated for decades and decades without these shields. They provide minimal water/splash coverage. They provide little to no "physical" coverage. As you say, if you hit something hard enough to crack the oil pan, that piece of plastic is going to break as well and provide no protection. I believe their primary function is "aerodynamics".
