I've got a 2008 G35 sedan AWD with a leak in the power steering system inside the rack and pinion. I was going to replace the rack & pinion unit (and PS hoses) using a Cardone rebuilt unit. They are listed as being available with and without the EVO. Does this mean the EVO is not present on all cars; or the EVO is on all cars and this gives me the option of transferring the original EVO to the rebuilt unit?

 

Not really sure about the V36 chassis, I know they started adding variable output at some point but I don't know if it was on ALL the cars or just as an option for some?

Get your car up on jackstands, remove the splash shield and look for a wiring harnesses coming out of the main body of the unit right where the steering shaft attaches. If you have a wiring harness then you have variable output.

From what I've watched on youtube, as long as I keep the steering wheel from moving, it should be an easy install (neglecting rust).

 

Yeah it helps to keep the steering wheel locked straight ahead by using a ratcheting strap from the steering wheel down to the brake pedal. It's not a huge deal though, Just take some good measurements on the old and new rack and set the outer tie rod distance the same as the old rack. I usually just unbolt them both, set them on the ground next to one another, use a tape measure and go from some point to whatever point I'm measuring on and adjust the new rack by hand to make those tie rod ends the correct matching length on both.

Be sure to set both sides, start by measuring to where the threads start, back to center, and center up the new rack. Then set the outer tie rod end distance left and right, and from rod end to rod end and get it just as absolutely close as you're able to the existing rack.

You will still need an alignment regardless but it keeps their work to a minimum.

 

I am replacing my Rack and Pinion due to leaking and the EVO is essentially galvanized onto the old rack. I can not remove it. Does anyone know if there are aftermarket EVO's that are compatible. All the racks I have found do not include the EVO.

Unfortunately I can't reinstall the old one easily as one the low pressure outlet was stripped.

I actually did find one on Rock Auto at the below link. It does not state it in the title but it is for an x model and does state:

• Electronic solenoids are tested to verify proper performance

I installed it and has been working well.
